The Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC) is the professional non-profit association representing midwives in BC. Our mission is to sustain the midwifery profession through advocacy, continuous development, and enhancement of services, positioning midwives as primary care providers.
With over 400 dedicated members, MABC strives to ensure the highest standards of perinatal and sexual health care. We provide access to education and resources that support midwives in delivering exceptional care, expanding access to midwifery services, and promoting the development and sustainability of midwifery services in BC.
We are excited to announce a new position within our newly developed Strategic Initiatives Department: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist. This role will help increase the professional and political profile of midwives within the BC health care system and advocate for excellence in reproductive, newborn, and infant health care. **Job Title**: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Specialist
**Position Overview**: Directly report to the Strategic Officer, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Specialist at MABC is responsible for promoting health equity, quality, and human rights within the midwifery profession. This role involves advocating for racial justice, developing policies to address systemic inequities, and fostering an inclusive environment for midwives and clients. The DEI Specialist will support MABC's strategic goals for 2025-2030 by ensuring that midwifery services are accessible, equitable, and culturally safe.
**Shared Responsibilities**
- Works collaboratively within and across teams to ensure high-quality programs and services for members.
- Provides support to colleagues during periods of high workload.
- Attends and participates in staff and team meetings.
- Develop an annual work plan with the direct supervisor in the context of the MABC strategic plan.
**Main Responsibilities**:
- **Policy Development and Advocacy**:
- Research and develop policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within midwifery practice.
- Advocate for midwifery perspectives in healthcare policy development.
- Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments that impact health equity and human rights.
- Prepare and submit policy briefs and position statements to government bodies.
- **Health Equity Initiatives**:
- Develop and implement initiatives to address health disparities and promote equitable access to midwifery services.
- Collaborate with midwives, healthcare providers, and community organizations to identify and address barriers to care.
- Promote reproductive justice, human rights, and equity in perinatal care.
- **Community Engagement and Outreach**:
- Engage with diverse communities to promote midwifery services and advocate for health equity.
- Organize and manage events, workshops, and other engagement activities.
- Develop easy-to-access resources and resource networks for midwives and clients.
- Support Indigenous and BIPOC midwives through tailored engagement strategies.
- **Training and Education**:
- Develop and deliver training programs focused on cultural safety, anti-racism, and anti-oppression.
- Provide continuing education opportunities and publish clinical practice guidelines.
- Support professional development and education initiatives for midwives.
- **Collaboration and Integration**:
- Promote collaboration and integration of midwives within the healthcare system.
- Foster interdisciplinary teamwork and communication.
- Support initiatives enhancing the role of midwives in patient care.
- Support the restoration and renewal of Indigenous midwifery.
- **Performance Metrics**:
- Track and evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs) related to DEI initiatives.
Provide regular updates and reports on the progress and impact of DEI activities
**Main Qualifications**:
- **Education**: Master’s degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Human Resources, Law, Public Relations, Social Justice, or a related field.
- **Experience**: Minimum of 4 years of related professional experience in equity, diversity and inclusion preferably in healthcare or a not-for-profit organization. Experience in an academic setting is highly valued.
- **Knowledge**: A strong understanding of human rights and health equity, along with the ability to propose strategies to address systemic racism and inequities, is essential. Having a fundamental knowledge of the organization and its interconnected components within the BC healthcare system. Experience in midwifery practices is a plus.
