Technical Assistant

Under the direction and supervision of the Athletic Field Technician II and the Superintendent of Centralized Park Services, the Athletic Field Technical Assistant will be responsible for monitoring the Parks and Open Space Division Athletic Field inventory, inspecting Athletic Fields and sport field amenity assets, occasionally monitoring the use of Athletic Fields by sport user groups and assisting in the development of an Athletic Field Classification system based on field quality and available amenities. The Technical Assistant will assist with inspections of athletic fields and monitors field use, collect and analyze data of Athletic Field inventory, plan and prioritize the repair, maintenance and/or replacement schedules for athletic field inventory.

In the role of the Athletic Field Technical Assistant, the incumbent will be required to communicate with sport user groups, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other external stakeholder groups, internal staff and the general public. The general function of this position is to assist the Athletic Field Technician II with the coordination of the overall management of the division’s athletic fields, assisting with developing an athletic field classification system, maintain records as required and, assisting in responding to customer service requests. In the course of carrying out daily tasks, the incumbent practices established safety procedures in the execution of assigned duties.
**As the Athletic Fields Technical Assistant you will**:

- Assist in the inspections of athletic fields to contribute to athletic field inventory
- Assist in the collection of data for all City of Winnipeg Athletic Fields
- Assist in the gathering and distribution of information for the booking and scheduling of athletic fields
- Assist in the monitoring of athletic fields to ensure user have the appropriate permits and documentation

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- Grade 12 education or equivalent
- Minimum one year of Certificate or Diploma in Horticulture (i.e. Landscape Technician Apprentice, Prairie Horticulture Certificate, Greenspace Management), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience directly related to the duties of the position
- Six (6) months experience in one of the following areas; Landscape Development, landscape construction, Horticulture, Athletic Field inspection, Field maintenance (ex. replacing turf, cleaning culverts)
- Canadian Playground Maintenance course certification (or successful completion within an acceptable timeframe as determined by the Department).
- Successful completion (or be willing to obtain within a specified timeframe) the following courses:

- First Aid
- WHMIS/GHS
- Temporary Traffic Control
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public.
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to prepare and complete required reports and records related to athletic field bookings.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Ability to problem solve and complete assigned tasks under mínimal supervision.
- Ability to stay organized and prioritize workload.
- Proficient in the use of computers and mobile technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and Parks Asset Inventory software.
- Ability to develop and maintain information databases, tracking sheets, inventory systems and other data collection systems
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions and regulations applicable to the positions area of work.

**Conditions of employment**:

- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Prior to commencement of employment, the successful applicant will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination by providing a Government of Manitoba issued QR code and photo identification or providing proof of an exemption from the COVID - 19 vaccination approved by the Government of Manitoba.
- Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Physically capable of performing the position’s duties, including capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, performing outside work for extended periods of time over uneven terrain.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work various shifts including evenings, weekends, overtime at various locations, as required.
