**Communications Specialist**

The Communications Specialist, reporting to the Regional Communications Team Lead, is an experienced and highly motivated communications professional who works within the Marketing and Communications team to support the promotion, growth, and overall reputation of the STARS brand through their expertise in communications, media relations, and issues management.

The Communications Specialist will work with the Marketing & Communications department and the Regional Communications Team Lead to provide strategic communications and media relations support to STARS’ foundation and operations teams. With demonstrated experience, you will be highly motivated, curious, strategic, self-driven, and detail-oriented. You will thrive on collaboration with colleagues, donors, and other allies, and will align with the STARS values and strategic vision.

**Is this the challenge for you?**
- Play a key role in executing communication plans with clear KPIs, strategies and tactics;
- Responsible for maintaining metrics and reporting;
- Works closely with Regional Communications Team Lead to provide media relations and communications support to Foundation team, including stewardship, donor relations and events;
- Responsible for day-to-day media relations;
- Writes, edits, and manages approvals for communication materials as per communication strategies including key messages, web copy, marketing collateral, speaking notes, newsletter stories and publications;
- Prepare media materials including news releases, backgrounders, and media advisories;
- Conducts interviews with the purpose of writing and editing articles for internal and external audiences;
- Respond to and triage media requests - act as STARS spokesperson when necessary, regarding mission reporting;
- Proactively pitch media, coordinate media events, coordinate video and photo shoots, and support media tracking efforts;
- Create compelling copy for promotional materials including event handouts, invitations, proposals, brochures, posters and other materials as required.
- Support driving strategic communications plans across all three provincial regions.

**Do you have what it takes?**
- 2-4 years of progressive professional communications, public relations, media relations, or equivalent combination of education and progressive experience in a related field will be considered.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent preferred;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a mature, professional, and calm demeanour;
- Exceptional writing and copy-editing skills with experience with CP Style preferred;
- Advanced time management skills, ability to thrive with multiple priorities and extremely tight time lines and deadlines;
- Ability to take both an incredibly detailed tactical approach and the “big picture”/ strategic approach, dependent upon the circumstances;
- Experience working with media;
- Demonstrated ability to provide thought partnership on complex projects and issues;
- Experience writing and editing for various mediums;
- Portfolio demonstrating ability to create strong, compelling collateral;
- Project management and problem-solving skills;
- Demonstrated ability in taking initiative to drive projects forward.
- Ability to manage direction and input from internal and external sources;
- Collaborative team player who is flexible and driven with a keen attention to detail.
