Your role:
As Canada’s national public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to reflecting Canada’s diversity in its workforce, as well as across all of its platforms.

CBC Ottawa is looking for a creative, innovative, collaborative and independent-thinking journalist/producer for a unique role as associate producer for the content diversification and creator network unit. This would be a full-time position for 8 months, with the possibility to extend.

This position is different from any other in Ottawa’s newsroom. Reporting to the unit producer, you will work to put together compelling, original digital content that pushes the boundaries of our storytelling, focusing on new, diverse perspectives and experiences, told in innovative ways with the goal to draw in new audiences. While the majority of your time will be spent working with and developing video storytelling projects with emerging creators, you will also be asked to work on a range of storytelling projects, from first person written pieces to photography to graphic storytelling to everything in between, and your job will also include bringing those stories to the audience, on multiple emerging platforms, to reach the audience where they are. From pitch to publication, you’ll strive to find homes for these diverse perspectives and stories at CBC Ottawa and across CBC, while fostering a community of creators and continuing to build this network.

Your strengths are both in imaginative storytelling and developing relationships with potential freelance creators, sources and audience members to develop projects that are firmly rooted in this community but that are also surprising to our audience. You are able to encourage and build momentum with emerging storytellers, bringing in their unique perspectives, while communicating the need to balance this with journalistically rigorous storytelling.

Strong journalism, storytelling and relationship-building skills are needed, as well as an ability to write and edit. Video skills are an asset, but an interest in learning new ways of video storytelling is more important, alongside a genuine interest in exploring digital storytelling tools. An interest in mentoring and interacting with those outside the CBC is key, as well as a strong ability to communicate and share your work internally. An independent-thinker who can juggle multiple projects on multiple timelines is essential. Knowledge of contracting and rights issues is an asset.

As the primary associate producer for this unit, you will pitch original ideas that connect with the community, seek diverse perspectives and new creators as well as innovative treatments that help stories resonate with new audiences. You will assist in developing digital content including researching, writing, editing, organizing shoots and reviewing freelancer work as needed. You will balance your work managing creator’s projects with content diversification or first person stories, on different deadlines. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or show policies, practices and standards, but initiative and independent judgment are required.

Key Tasks include:
- Seek out, connect and build relationships with emerging independent creators and talent from diverse and digital communities, mentor and guide them from pitch to publication and create a sense of belonging for them within the CBC.- Throughout the process, provide creative feedback and notes while communicating CBC’s journalistic principles and business and rights practices, ensuring that bar is met before publication.- Assist in developing content including idea generating, chasing of voices, writing, researching, editing, preparing questioning, setting up shoots, fact-checking, developing the writing or ideas of others- Assist in packaging Creator Network stories for multiple platforms as they evolve, including writing web articles, radio and tv scripts, Youtube titles and thumbnails, and producing social media content, as well as managing internal communications around publication.- Assist with assessing First Person story ideas and pitches, helping to shape, mentor, edit, fact-check and pa
