**Laboratory Technician**

**Description**

The Laboratory Technician performs chemical sampling, testing and other laboratory duties in support of the plant’s biodiesel fuels quality control function while complying with all safety, quality, and environmental requirements. The Laboratory Technician reports to the Laboratory Manager who provides performance, coaching and feedback. This position also works closely with Shift and Maintenance Supervisors and other personnel in the plant to solve quality control problems in a timely manner to ensure customer satisfaction. Shift assignment may vary as required to maintain plant operations. This position will be a 3 month contract position for Night shift rotation either Monday to Friday or Sunday to Thursday.

**Responsibilities**

The Laboratory Technician helps achieve and maintain product quality in Canary Biofuel’s production facility with the following responsibilities:

- Develop data necessary for the issuance of the Certificate of Analysis for final product,
- Sample and analyze raw material, work in progress and finished product,
- Perform testing and calibrate instruments following laboratory and testing priorities, plans and schedules, including working with third party laboratories as needed,
- Ensure use of safety equipment and follow all safety and environmental SOPs, protocols, and plans,
- Support emergency response and shutdown activities, as required,
- Follow company laboratory and quality analysis related policies and standard operating procedures, including participation in the completion of hazard assessments,
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, including inventory and identification of chemical and critical spare parts materials needs,
- Contribute to laboratory and product quality goals and objectives,
- Monitor key parameters and maintain housekeeping, as required,
- Support research and development activities, as assigned,
- Participate in team building, training, coaching, and mentoring, as required,
- Help maintain laboratory operations, safety, training, and quality records,
- Participate in and contribute to quality and improvement initiatives,
- Use electronic communication tools and communicate with senior management in a timely manner on product quality, as required,
- Submit accurate timesheets and respond positively to corrective performance management feedback,
- Positively represent Canary Biofuels Inc. in the community,
- Other duties as may be assigned to maintain safety, quality and/or environmental sustainability in Canary Biofuels Inc.’s plant and laboratory operations,

**Qualifications - Required**
- 1 to 2 years of industrial chemistry experience in a quality laboratory, including testing of raw material and processed product,
- 1 to 2 years of experience with laboratory chemical supplies and spare parts inventory controls,
- Excellent oral and written communications, work organization, and time management skills.

**Qualifications - Desired**
- Experience operating laboratory instrumentation such as GC/FID, IR, ICP, Karl Fischer titrator, Flash point apparatus, etc.,
- Experience implementing a BQ9000 or ISO9000 or COR laboratory program
- Experience working in a petrochemical plant,
- Continuous improvement or quality management program experience in a production environment,
- First aid, TDG and WHMIS.

**Education/Certifications - Required**
- High school degree or equivalent with vocational or college training in industrial chemistry a plus,
- Valid Alberta driver license.

Applicants are required to pass pre-employment testing and must be qualified to work in Canada.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract

- Night shift
