Temporary Head Caretaker at Granite Ridge Education Centre

Limestone schools serve more than 20,500 students in 55 schools and five alternative education centres covering a geographic area of 7,719 square kilometres across the City of Kingston, the Townships of Central Frontenac, North Frontenac, South Frontenac, Addington Highlands, Loyalist, Stone Mills, the Frontenac Islands and the Town of Greater Napanee. Position Summary Responsible to the Area Supervisor and School Principal, the Head Caretaker Secondary is accountable for the overall operation of the building(s), its physical plant and supervision of caretaking staff. The Head Caretaker Secondary also performs caretaking duties and responsibilities to ensure that the areas of responsibility are maintained at an acceptable level of cleanliness and safe in order to meet the needs of the building occupants. (Students, Staff and Public).
Summary of Responsibilities Supervise, co-ordinate, direct and guide caretakers under his/her responsibility. Train, monitor, log and provide regular instruction, input and feedback with respect to contracted operational services, cleaning procedures and caretaker performance. Provide input to the Area Supervisor with respect to training and evaluations of permanent and casual employees. Secure building and/or areas assigned during and at the end of the shift.
Complete Work orders (electronic or verbal) on any maintenance needs that are required to the site including building structure, mechanical systems or cleaning equipment. Develop, implement and assign a schedule of tasks and cleaning areas for each caretaker (including her/himself).Perform daily cleaning and routine maintenance requirements i.e. dusts, washes and polishes office and classroom furnishings, washes, cleans and disinfects washroom facilities, vacuums, sweeps and mops floors, as required. Flush water systems for lead and complete event log as assigned to remain compliant with the Ontario Drinking Water Regulation 243/07 under the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act.
Perform all duties and responsibilities as assigned to remain compliant with Ontario Drinking
- Water Systems Regulation (O. Reg. 170/03) under the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act. Duties include but are not limited to sampling, inspecting disinfection equipment, and logging data as is required for the operator of a small drinking water system.
Ensure the completion of scheduled inspections, tests and the logging of data with respect to playground equipment, all fire protection equipment including but not limited to fire alarm panels, pull-stations, fire dampers, sprinkler systems, and extinguishers as per the Ontario Fire Code. Be aware of all emergency procedures, and be familiar with the operation of heating, cooling, ventilating systems, fire safety equipment and security alarm systems. Accompany Board or outside agencies on inspections of the school/site such as pest control, safety audits, fire marshals, fire extinguisher repairs and contractors if required. Maintain current and accurate inventories, order and control distribution of caretaking supplies and equipment.
Maintain a daily log in accordance with instructions and maintain working instructions and manuals on cleaning equipment and equipment installed in the building. Prepare Board, Facility Services and other reports as directed. Maintain all steps, walkways and grounds in accordance with Board standards and safety requirements. Ensure that routine preventative maintenance is carried out on all mechanical and cleaning equipment.
Ensure understanding and adhere to all instructions and directives that are issued (i.e. Caretaker Operations Manual). Move furniture, equipment and supplies as required. Assist community use groups with access to area, direction and set-up of equipment where necessary.
Demonstrate good attendance and work in a healthy and safe manner. Perform all of the duties and responsibilities outlined above at an additional site when working in position as Head Caretaker (Twinned). Assign overtime equitably among employees. Perform snow removal, salting and sanding as required for safety and log completion in the Head Caretaker's log book.

Have the physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Suitable experience in cleaning and Physical Plant operation. Current Operation of Small Drinking-Water Systems Certificate (Designated Facilities Only) Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, First Aid, Fire and Safety Standards and Procedures, as well as security provisions.
