About the position(s)
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director, Indigenous Ways and Decolonization department and working closely with the Senior Curator of Indigenous Art, the Associate Curator assists with the care, documentation, development, interpretation and presentation of the collection of Indigenous art so as to further generate knowledge, understanding and appreciation of this collection and of Indigenous art in general. Develops proposals for exhibitions within the gallery and for possible touring to other venues. Actively collaborates with Indigenous artists, arts and culture professionals and Indigenous communities to centre Indigenous artistic and cultural practices within the gallery’s programming. Works collaboratively with other members of the Indigenous Ways and Decolonization team, as well as other gallery departments to bring Indigenous perspectives and decolonial methodologies and strategies to all the gallery’s public engagement and internal processes.
**Requirements**:
- Specialized knowledge of Indigenous art gained through post-secondary studies or equivalent experience within arts/cultural organizations;
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with Indigenous artists and communities in a gallery/museum/cultural organization, or as an independent curator
- Demonstrated history of critical writing for exhibitions; lectures, publications such as exhibition catalogues, scholarly monographs, educational and promotional material, corporate documents and new media text related to Indigenous art;
- Knowledge of the context, environment and interrelationships with and among the Indigenous arts community and Indigenous representation at the national and international levels
- Deep understanding of Indigenous pedagogies and ways of being and knowing related to Indigenous artistic and cultural practices;
- Lived experience and knowledge of Indigenous arts and cultures of the North would be considered an asset
- Knowledge of contemporary international Indigenous art and international experience would be considered an asset
- Excellent writing and editorial skills;
- Knowledge of or experience with an Indigenous language would be considered an asset
- Ability to work in both French and English would be considered an asset
- Ability to coordinate, control and organize multiple functions and activities;
- Knowledge of current exhibition methodologies, installations and practices, specifically from an Indigenous perspective;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
- A high degree of initiative, good judgment and the ability to work well under pressure;
- Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines;
- Ability to work independently and as a team member;
- Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
