Arts and Heritage Development champions the arts across the corporation and community and is responsible for arts development activities, programs and initiatives, including Community Art Programs, Public Art Programs, Cultural Funding/Support Programs, and Cultural Tourism/Festival/Industry initiatives among others.
You are responsible for providing a broad range of Indigenous and new immigrant cultural development services to the City of Ottawa by leading engagement, building relationships and participating in the planning and implementation of related cultural plans, policies, protocols and programs. You: develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders; collaboratively develop and deliver cultural programs and initiatives; undertake related research and analysis; and contribute to the achievement of team and corporate objectives.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCECompletion of 4 year university degree in Indigenous Studies, Heritage, History, Archaeology, Cultural Studies, Canadian Studies or related field
Minimum of 5 years of experience gained through progressively more responsible positions in the area of Heritage and Culture, with a focus on Indigenous or Immigrant Culture
Experience working within an Indigenous service provider organization or an immigrant service provider organization is desirable
KNOWLEDGE- Indigenous cultural practices, protocols and related policies
- Understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing
- Indigenous history, data sources and cultural practices related to the Ottawa area
- Familiar with the concept, practice and role of an Indigenous Host Nation and with the Algonquin Anishinabe First Nation, its communities, leaders, cultural players, artists and historians
- Knowledge of policies, issues and trends related to the Indigenous history and heritage in the areas of museums, archives, archaeology, commemoration, genealogy and built heritage
- Best practices for inclusion and engagement with Host Nation, First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations and practices in municipal cultural and heritage planning
- New immigrant general history, data, sources and cultural practices related to the Ottawa area
- Best practices for inclusion of new immigrant populations and practices in the municipal cultural sector
- Project management techniques; strategic and operational planning and evaluation
- Sources for comparative research, surveys and data analysis
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
- Ability to plan effective strategies for the development and implementation of strategic collaborations with the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation and within the Indigenous cultural context
- Ability to foster excellence and integrity in relationships with the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation and with urban First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations
- Ability to plan effective strategies for the inclusion of new immigrant communities in cultural and heritage initiatives
- Ability to foster excellence and integrity in relationships with new immigrant communities and organizations
- Ability to research and analyze community needs and recommend solutions
- Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and work with a team to develop realistic and innovative solutions to issues
- Develop and nurture partnerships and interact effectively and productively with various stakeholders with different cultural perspectives
- Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to initiate creative and innovative action/projects that target diverse audiences in the community
- Capable of dealing effectively with multiple demands, conflicting priorities, pressures and deadlines
- Sound judgement and decision making capabilities
- Positive, inclusive approach to project development and implementation
- Aptitude to bring conflicting points of view to consensus
- Promotes, provides and nurtures an environment of continuous learning
