THE OPPORTUNITY:
We are hiring an Associate Producer to work for Network Talk, assigned to _Cross Country Checkup _with Ian Hanomansing. It’s a weekly call-in show simulcast live on CBC Radio, CBC News Network and CBC News.CA. The role is for a 15-month contract backfilling the permanent full time AP. The job is based in Toronto. Please note: The job requires weekend work.

YOUR ROLE:
CBC’s _Cross Country Checkup_ is Canada's national town hall — offering the widest array of authentic, honest perspectives on the most pressing issues of the week. For nearly 60 years, it's where over half a million Canadians gather every Sunday, to feel the pulse of the country, to listen and to be heard.

Working under the direction of the Senior Producer, you have a clear understanding of the mandate of the program. Out of the universe of daily news, you are able to identify the issues Canadians want to talk about...issues where everyone has something at stake. You are good at formulating show questions that elicit surprising personal stories and fresh perspectives for our listeners and viewers. You’re able to find original, current affairs angles that advance news stories. You are fast, creative and accurate on breaking news chases. You are driven toward finding different perspectives that reflect the views of all Canadians. You have a deep curiosity about what motivates people - how their personal experiences shape their ideas and opinions. You are a hard-working self-starter and critical thinker. Your writing and research skills are excellent, thorough and detailed. You’re good at finding interesting, articulate and plain-spoken experts from non-traditional sources. You’re extremely proficient at using a wide range of digital sources to fact check, find expert guests and original first person stories.

You are a true news enthusiast who is interested in everything from current affairs, politics, pop culture, sports, health, technology, lifestyle and beyond. You embody Cross Country Checkup’s core values to be relevant, inclusive, interactive, balanced, candid and inquiring. You love to explore news angles with an eye to growing and engaging new audiences. You prioritize reflecting a wide range of different, diverse perspectives. You take initiative in framing and adding texture to topics through facts, clips, music, visuals etc. throughout the show. Your production skills include online publishing, audio editing and mixing (video editing is a bonus). You can manage multiple and often competing priorities. You’re a Google Suite super user, adept at working remotely (when necessary) using a variety of digital tools.

Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and experience with news and current affairs programming, with a proven ability to pivot quickly when breaking news occurs. They must also be able to grasp the kinds of stories that are relevant to all Canadians, while continuing to grow our audience in the 30-49 demographic.

KEY TASKS:
- Pitches news-related and evergreen main topic ideas, including guest rollouts; tape, and treatment ideas- Sources leading expert guests who can communicate essential fact-based context, and interesting insights in simple basic terms for a broad audience- Writes compelling q-lines for call-in topics which can range from accountability interviews to pop culture conversations and Ask Me Anything interviews- Prepares scripts, fact sheets, backgrounders and contact files; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program- Reviews and curates calls for the purpose of providing original, compelling stories and points of view- Identifies any potential JSP issues, flags to Senior Producer- Fluency in all aspects of audio production including tape gathering, phone clips, streeters, editing, and mixing- Demonstrates capacity for telling stories visually through pictures, video clips, subtitles and TV graphics- Writes, edits and packages copy for the web- Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production- As required, perform the following tasks:
