**POSITION**: Program Manager, Equine & Farm Animal Care

**STATUS**: Temporary; Full-Time - until incumbent returns

**SHIFT**: 35 hours per week

**LOCATION**: Provincial Office - Vancouver BC

**CLASSIFICATION**: Exempt

**About the Position**:
The Program Manager, Equine and Farm Animal Care Program ensures that optimal levels of care are administered to equine and farm animals housed in BC SPCA facilities or foster care. This care must be based on the Five Freedoms, regardless of their geographic location in the province. This position supports the three barn locations in Surrey, Nanaimo and Kelowna and acts as liaison with fosters/boarding facilities around the province. Responsibilities include excellent internal and external customer service, budget management, pathway planning and decision making including adoptions and care plans.

Additionally, this position assists with creating the vision for the equine and farm animal care program and building/maintaining relationships with various related communities and internal/external stakeholders province-wide.

**Some specific duties**:
**Program Development & Management**:

- Create and maintain evidence based BC SPCA programs, policies, procedures and forms related to equine and farm animal care, with support from Animal Health, Welfare and Behaviour.
- Ensures the well-being of equine and farm animals in BC SPCA care is maintained in accordance with policies and procedures related to animal health, welfare and behaviour.
- Provide expertise to Animal Centre barns in Surrey, Nanaimo and Kelowna, in order to maintain the standard of health and welfare that is required for all farm animals in accordance with BC SPCA Protocols.
- Evaluate the pathway for equine and farm animals in BC SPCA care on a regular basis to ensure a reduced length of stay and maintain capacity for care.
- Provide guidance in determining suitability of potential animal adoptive homes for the purposes of best possible match between adopter and animal.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders such as the equine community, boarding facilities, foster homes, large animal transport contractors, farm animal care professionals and veterinarians.

**Leadership & Administration**:

- Responsible for industry-related training of barn staff and volunteers.
- Acts as a champion of the BC SPCA Health & Safety program, advising on safe work practices to protect staff, volunteers and animals from injury and/or illness.
- Acts as a conduit of information by communicating both internally and externally, as required.
- Participates in preparing an annual budget for the Provincial Equine and Farm Animal Foster Program including annual revenue, operating and capital expenditures.
- Assist departments in equine and farm communications and fundraising initiatives.
- Participate in meetings and on committees, as required.

**Qualifications you need to have**:

- Post-secondary education in a related field plus 5 years’ related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer.

**o. Related experience includes but is not limited to**:

- Direct equine and farm animal care (minimum 3 years);
- Positive reinforcement handling/training;
- Customer service;
- Budget management;
- Policy writing and program management.
- Must have a Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract
- Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
- Sound knowledge of farm animals (particularly horses), their breeds, characteristics and more common diseases.
- Excellent communication skills and genuine desire/ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders in a positive and respectful manner
- Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and to work within a demanding work schedule with mínimal supervision
- Computer skills - Windows, MS Office incl. PowerPoint, Excel, Asana
- Philosophical harmony with the BC SPCA mission, vision, and strategic directions
