Our Prevention Services division is dedicated to the prevention of workplace injury, illness, disease, and death. We engage with employers and workers to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe primarily through education, consultation, and enforcement.

As an Occupational Safety Officer (OSO) you will have at least four years of direct hands-on progressive industry experience in one or two of the following industries and have been involved in workplace health and safety in the following industries: Health & Safety Program Management, Health Care, Psychological Health & Safety, and Retail & Hospitality.

**How you'll make a difference**:You’ll help ensure B.C. workers go home safely at the end of their workday.
**Where you’ll work**
In this role, you’ll work primarily in the field or community and remotely, based on the operational needs of the position. There may also be occasions when you are asked to come to the office, such as for training and orientation.
What you'll do
**As an Occupational Safety Officer you will**:
Engage with workers and employers from various industries to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe through education, consultation, and enforcement. You’ll make a positive, tangible difference by:
- Proactively inspecting workplaces to ensure that a safe work environment is being maintained and conveying the potential hazards, risks, and /or controls
- Mitigating potential health or safety hazards to workers, that workers and the employer have been apprised of their responsibilities, and that first aid services and equipment meet current criteria
- Writing orders to ensure compliance with the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulation
- Consulting with and educating employers, workers, and others on occupational health and safety matters
- Partnering with industry to ensure the success of safety initiatives
- Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

- Use their critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate unique workplace health and safety hazards and identify effective mitigations and controls
- Make and enforce timely decisions independently and objectively, using sound judgment and technical knowledge
- Handle high pressure, and sometimes tense situations and emergencies with a high level of professionalism
- Work variable hours, be available for emergency call out after hours or weekends, and be willing to travel throughout the province
