**Your Role**

GEI Canada’s instrumentation practice continues to grow, and we are seeking a Geostructural Intermediated Instrumentation Specialist.

This position includes interfacing directly with existing clients and identifying and developing new clients both within GEI and externally. There will be frequent interaction with agencies on behalf of our clients to guide the permitting process; this requires a strong understanding of their monitoring requirements. Example agencies are Metrolinx, MTO, Infrastructure Ontario, City of Toronto, and various US agencies as needed to collaborate with GEI’s US teams.

**Primary Responsibilities**

Key responsibilities and duties include designing, installing, and maintaining geotechnical, geostructural, and civil instrumentation and ADAS systems, and collecting and interpreting instrumentation data. The role also includes interpreting monitoring data and prepare summary reports.

The responsibilities will also include mentoring junior geostructural instrumentation and field staff. Other responsibilities will be reporting, developing deliverables, and coordination of GEI field staff.

It is further expected that competent knowledge of civil and geotechnical engineering principles are used for the purpose of decision making and reporting on site, including reviews for general conformance of civil and geotechnical aspects, and coordination of specialized testing (i.e. geotechnical materials) as needed.

**Other responsibilities include**:

- Assist in maintaining organized databases that include instrumentation records, calibration certificates, unit readouts, equipment manuals, and relevant industry standards. Ensure that all documentation is up-to-date, easily accessible, and complies with applicable regulations and procedures.
- Carry out site visits to assess and plan the necessary tools and equipment for specific instrumentation installations. This includes evaluating the site conditions to ensure the correct selection of equipment. Additionally, install instrumentation and monitoring systems in alignment with the project's specifications and requirements, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with industry standards.
- Engage in clear and effective communication with engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders regarding monitoring and instrumentation matters. Additionally, take part in site planning, staff coordination, and safety meetings to ensure alignment on project objectives and safety protocols.
- Installing and monitoring inclinometers, SAAV, extensometers, vibrating wire piezometers, strain gauges, observation wells, seismographs, and robotic total station systems, etc.
- Maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation equipment.
- Handling difficult situations with tact and diplomacy to maintain positive working relationships with clients.
- Executing diligently prescribed company technical procedures, safe work, environmental practices, and work plans.
- Traveling to project sites as required. Travel within North America is expected.
- Participating in technical committees and writing papers for industry events.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- BS in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical or related studies
- Professional Engineer’s license, or ability to obtain, is preferred
- 10-15+ years of experience
- Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation equipment
- Experience with Leica equipment and GeoMos Monitoring Solution is a plus
- Experience with online instrumentation visualization tools like MissionOS
- Experience in wiring electronics and understanding remote communications
- Knowledge in soldering, wiring, electrical assembly, cabling, and low voltage electrical systems a plus
- Experience in fundamental computer skills and computer-programming experience with SQL, CRBasic editor, python, XML, or other languages is preferred
- Surveying experience is an asset
- Competent knowledge of civil and geotechnical principles with the ability to communicate and report on observations a must
- Excellent writing and general communication skills
- 25% or more travel as needed
- Ability to perform field work
- Valid Canadian. driver’s license
