The Department of Justice and Public Safety is committed to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility. **Duties will include but are not limited to**:
- Provide initial legal advice to vulnerable persons;
- Represent the vulnerable person before Courts and administrative boards (examples: Adult Protection matters, Guardianship matters; Mental Health Review Board hearings);
- Conduct research and perform legal analysis;
- Serve collaboratively as Legal Aid representative on internal and external committees addressing access to justice;
- Work closely with management and support staff on matters of intake, eligibility assessment, conflict avoidance, caseload management, data collection and reporting;
- The lawyer is expected to provide these legal services with mínimal supervision; and
- Other related duties as required.
**Minimum Qualifications**:
- Graduation from a recognized law school and membership in the Law Society of Prince Edward Island is required;
- Must have extensive experience as a practicing lawyer, either in private practice or in the public sector; Applicants who do not have extensive experience may be considered for a provisional appointment;
- Sensitivity to the needs of people who are vulnerable because of physical, emotional or intellectual disability;
- Effective skills for personal communication across a very wide range of socioeconomic levels;
- A solid capacity to maintain composure in the midst of hostile conflicts and highly emotional situations;
- Strong negotiation, mediation and litigation skills;
- Crisis management skills;
- Ability to work both independently in a self-directed manner and as an effective member of a team;
- Successful applicant must provide proof of a successful Criminal Record Check prior to employment.
