Environmental Health Program Coordinator

**Job Description**:
**POSITION PURPOSE**
Reporting to the Manager, Health Protection, is responsible for co-ordinating and supporting environmental health surveillance, research, partnerships, development of healthy public policy, information management, and data management relating to the Ontario Public Health Standards - Healthy Environments Program Standard and applicable protocols.
**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Assists the Manager in coordinating Healthy Environments Program functions and staff related activities.
- Coordinates the assessment and surveillance of environmental health issues including collection, monitoring, analyzing and reporting on environmental health hazards and population health status data.
- Coordinates activities to assist community partners to develop healthy public policies related to reducing exposure to health hazards.
- Works with the Healthy Environments Team to develop population health assessment and surveillance tools relating to environmental health (e.g. indicators, epidemiology and research methods, statistical analysis).
- Works with the Healthy Environments Team to collect, analyze, and report on surveillance data and analyze and synthesize data and research findings to reduce the burden of illness from health hazards and to influence the development of healthy public policy.
- Utilizes surveillance and research information to identify potential environmental health hazards, risks, trends and mitigation and control measures.
- Promotes collaboration between the Health Protection Division and other Divisions, Branches and Departments to address the burden of illness from environmental health hazards in the community.
- Liaises with Public Health Branch staff to ensure consistency in the collection, collation, analyzing and reporting on health related information.
- Ensures compliance with Regional protocols in the development of external partnerships, including contracted services and service agreements that support population health assessment and environmental health surveillance.
- Ensures that environmental public health programs and practices are informed by scientific evidence.
- May occasionally be required to respond to emergency situations outside of normal business hours, as related to the Departmental Emergency Plan.
- Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Successful completion of a University Degree in Environment Health, Public Health, Environmental Studies or a similar field or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum three (3) years experience in co-ordinating environmental health projects.
- Experience in project management in the environmental health field.
- Demonstrated experience in research methodologies and the collection and interpretation of health-related data.
- Demonstrated experience and skills in partnership building and community engagement.
- Demonstrated use of evidence informed practice including population health assessment, surveillance, research, and program evaluation to influence healthy public policy and to prevent or reduce the burden of illness from health hazards in the environment.
- Knowledge of current legislation and policy, including federal and provincial legislation relating to health protection, environmental protection, land use planning, air quality, water quality, and hazardous products.
