**Position Summary**

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research plays a crucial role in the university. With responsibility for the leadership and administration of U of A’s graduate programs, the faculty supports graduate students and the administration of their programs through functions such as admissions, registration, student programs, and supervisory examining committees. It also determines the university’s requirements and standards for graduate admissions, and administers a number of prestigious graduate scholarship programs. The faculty is a crucial entity in the provision of effective graduate education within the university. The faculty also plays a vital role as the administrative home for postdoctoral fellows and is charged with ensuring supportive programming for these essential members of our community.

The Vice-Provost and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research reports directly to the Deputy Provost (Students and Enrolment). A senior academic administrator at the university, they are a member of Deans’ Council and responsible for all operations of the faculty, including budget and fund development. The vice-provost and dean manages a large staff and provides innovative leadership in building a broad vision for the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. They work for the success of graduate students across the university through providing leadership on many initiatives to enhance the graduate student experience, through the administration of graduate academic, research, and scholarship programs, and through the facilitation of inter-faculty collaboration. The vice-provost and dean also builds and maintains strong partnerships with external stakeholders, including governments, funding agencies, and other universities.
