The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.
Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include:
- Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces
- New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine and mental health patients
- New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces

Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and plastics specialties.

Detailed Overview:
Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families and under the delegation of the Registered Speech Language Pathologist and within the Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) Code of Ethics, the Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) implements rehabilitative Speech Language Pathology treatment plans and programs and assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist in monitoring and evaluating patient’s/resident’s progression.
**Responsibilities**:
- Administers defined screening protocols for speech, language, and swallowing, without interpretation, selected by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
- Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist during assessments, including, but not limited to, collecting data, assisting with behaviour management techniques, providing positive reinforcement as directed.
- Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist in providing care to clients with dysphagia (e.g., assisting with feeding of patients, demonstrating and practicing compensatory strategies and/or exercises).
- Follows and implements documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist clients in individual and group activities.
- Provides aspects of treatment to clients as directed by the Registered Speech Language Pathologist. Treatment may include but is not limited to the use of virtual care when the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist identifies clients for this service delivery model.
- Documents client performance during treatment and reporting the information to the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist. Assists with documentation in compliance with the Documentation & Records Management standard of practice and associated clinical practice guideline as per College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia and Fraser Health guidelines.
- Relays treatment processes (e.g., scheduling, treatment goals and activities, home programming, etc.) to clients with support and approval of the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
- Participates in family conferences, case conferences or interprofessional team conferences with the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist present.
