**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Regional Manager or designate within the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Regional Built Environment Consultant (RBEC) assists with reducing the incidence of preventable disease, injury, and other health hazards and optimizing health and social wellbeing associated with the built environment. The Regional Built Environment Consultant supports VIHA staff in the development of healthy public policy and community strategies through consultation and collaboration with local and regional governments and non-governmental organizations. Responsibilities include advising Environmental Health Officers on matters relating to issues such as community planning and design, industrial land use, on-site and community sewerage treatment, waste management, air quality, recreational facilities, and housing. Travel is a requirement of this position and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent recognized by the Board of Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada). Eligible for registration in the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors, BC Branch. Evidence of specialized education, training and experience in areas focusing on modern methods, principles, techniques and best practices of healthy built environment core functions, knowledge of provincial legislation and local bylaws pertaining to healthy built environments. Valid BC Driver's Licence.
Three (3) years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently, organize workload and establish priorities.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of research methodology and analysis.
- Ability to secure facts through investigation, inspection and surveys.
- Ability to develop policy and recommend changes and revisions in programs, bylaws and regulations and write comprehensive reports.
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with management, colleagues, government agencies, clients and the public.
- Ability to speak in public, make presentations and address community groups.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
