Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Farm Assistant at our specialty mushroom and microgreens farm. As a Farm Assistant, you will play a vital role in the daily operations of our farm, assisting with various tasks related to mushroom cultivation, microgreens production, and overall farm management. This is a unique opportunity for someone interested in sustainable agriculture and the diverse world of specialty crops.

**Responsibilities**:
1. Mushroom Cultivation: Assist in all aspects of mushroom cultivation, including substrate preparation, inoculation, spawning, fruiting, and harvest. Adhere to established protocols and maintain strict hygiene standards to ensure optimal mushroom growth and quality.

2. Microgreens Production: Participate in the production of microgreens, including sowing seeds, watering, monitoring growth, and harvesting. Follow precise guidelines to ensure consistent quality and high yields of microgreens.

3. Farm Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing growing areas, equipment, and tools. Monitor and maintain optimal environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) for mushroom and microgreens growth.

4. Harvesting and Packaging: Engage in the harvesting process, carefully harvesting, sorting, and packaging mushrooms and microgreens based on size, quality, and readiness for market. Ensure proper labeling, storage, and presentation of the products.

5. Crop Monitoring: Regularly inspect mushroom and microgreens crops for signs of pests, diseases, or other issues that may impact yield or quality. Report any concerns to the farm manager and assist in implementing appropriate measures for pest control and disease prevention.

6. Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of daily activities, including mushroom and microgreens yields, environmental conditions, and maintenance tasks. Assist in inventory management, ensuring an adequate supply of materials and supplies for farm operations.

7. Farm Expansion and Innovation: Collaborate with the farm manager in exploring new techniques, technologies, and research opportunities to enhance productivity, sustainability, and quality in mushroom and microgreens cultivation. Contribute ideas for farm expansion, product diversification, or process improvement.

8. Farm Sales and Customer Service: Assist in packaging mushrooms and microgreens for sale, managing inventory for on-site farm stands, local markets, or online platforms. Provide exceptional customer service, addressing inquiries, and educating customers about our specialty crops.

9. Delivery of Specialty mushrooms and microgreens: the ability to use your own vehicle to deliver produce to customers within Waterloo Region. Vehicle allowance will be provided.

Qualifications:
1. Passion for Agriculture: Genuine interest in sustainable farming practices, specialty crops, and the agricultural industry. Knowledge or experience in mushroom cultivation and microgreens production is a plus but not required.

3. Attention to Detail: Strong observational skills and the ability to follow precise instructions are crucial. A keen eye for detail is necessary to identify and address any issues that may impact crop growth or quality.

4. Team Player: Willingness to work collaboratively with other team members and communicate effectively. The farm assistant must be reliable, punctual, and capable of working independently when necessary.

5. Flexibility: Adaptability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced farm environment where tasks may vary depending on seasonal demands and priorities. Willingness to work weekends, holidays, or irregular hours as required.

6. Sustainability Mindset: Familiarity with organic farming practices, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship is highly valued.

7. Valid driver's license: from time to time you may be required to deliver produce within Waterloo Region. Vehicle allowance will be provided.

8. Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional training or certification in agriculture, horticulture, or related fields is desirable but not mandatory.
