Shop Assistant, Junior Laboratory Technician

**Overview**
**Responsibilities**:
**Material Preparation**:
- Assist in the preparation of metal specimens for testing, including cutting, grinding, and machining.
- Follow established procedures and safety guidelines to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Use of flame cutting equipment (plasma, oxyfuel)
- Maintain an organized inventory of prepared specimens.
**Testing Support**:
- Collaborate with the lab technologist in setting up and conducting mechanical tests on materials.
- Operate and maintain testing equipment, ensuring calibration and functionality.
- Record and analyze test data, providing summaries and reports as required.
**Welding Technology**:
- Work with the lab team to perform destructive and non-destructive tests on welded joints.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of welding procedures and techniques.
**Equipment Maintenance**:
- Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality.
- Identify and report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the supervisor.
**Safety and Compliance**:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations within the laboratory.
- Participate in safety training and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and quality control procedures.
**Documentation and Reporting**:
- Maintain detailed records of all tests conducted, including parameters, results, and observations.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
**Collaboration**:
- Work collaboratively with the laboratory team to achieve project goals and deadlines.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors to ensure smooth workflow.
**Qualifications**:
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in materials, mechanical, metallurgical engineering, welding engineering technology or a related field.
- Knowledge of materials testing techniques and procedures.
- Familiarity with welding technology and related processes.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow established protocols and work independently.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
**Preferred Skills**:
- Experience with testing equipment such as tensile testers, hardness testers, and impact testers.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards and testing methodologies.
- Previous laboratory experience through internships or co-op programs.
- Proficiency in data analysis and reporting software.
**Physical Job Requirements**:
- Some heavy lifting of welded steel samples.
- Must be able to lift a 25 lb weight above your head freely and unassisted.

Pay: $30.00-$45.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10 - 20 per week
