**About The Child and Youth Department**:Designed to be a preventative, intervention, and resiliency-based support for all youth demographics ages 7-18 years of age.Our programs and services build resilient children and youth by developing trust, empathy, empowering young individuals, improving self-worth, communication skills, and healthy coping skills.Programs and Services include: Mentoring Program (Enhanced), Junior Mentor Program, Heart of the Matter Program, Community Helpers Program, Mindful Minds, Summer Camp, and Community Presentations/Workshops.
**About the role**: Some Other Solutions is seeking a Community Helpers Program Coordinator to join our Community Outreach Team. The Community Helpers Program Coordinator will facilitate the suicide prevention program to youth ages 12-30 and adults who work with youth/public patrons in the community. With the appropriate training you will be able to teach this program within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The CHP coordinator is also responsible for engaging youth in Wood Buffalo and the surrounding communities by providing education opportunities to children and youth through Some Other Solutions in school mentoring and group programs and community events to enhance the well-being of the children, youth, and young adult population by creating confident, resilient individuals in the community.
**About the Community Helpers Program**:The Community Helpers Program is an Alberta Health Services program. Community Helpers is a suicide prevention program that is targeted for youth and adults. This program helps identify and train Alberta’s youth and young adults and as well as adults who support people through challenges. The program provides opportunities to strengthen support skills, learn more about mental health issues and suicide prevention, and increase individuals’ community knowledge.
The Program:
- Bridges “formal” and “informal” support for people
- Focuses on prevention and early identification for people who may be at risk
- Increases confidence when dealing with a crisis
- Reduces stigma by increasing community awareness
- Expands knowledge on mental health issues
- Improves interventions for those who may be at risk of suicide
- Self-awareness, self-care, and boundaries
**Skills and Abilities**:
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent facilitation skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Understanding of mental health, wellness and suicide prevention
- Understanding of youth development
- Ability to collaborate and build rapport within the community
- Cultural awareness
**Responsibilities**:
- Plan, set up, prepare and facilitate Community Helpers Program to youth ages 12-30, community members, professionals, and individuals working with public patrons
- Adapt program to be able to be offered through different avenues such as: in office, throughout the community and virtually
- Plan and deliver information sessions about Community Helpers Program
- Prepare materials and activities that promote mental health and well-being of community members and reduce stigma surrounding mental health and suicide
- Ensure program reflects logic models and achieved intended outcomes
- Engage and collaborate with local community stakeholders
- Identify potential community sites to offer program including but not limited to schools, post-secondary institutes, community organizations, and workplaces that employ youth and young adults.
- Facilitate access to mental health, suicide prevention, and other areas as required
- Offer evidence based mental health and suicide prevention resources and information to clients
- Oversee completion of evaluation tools for program and organization
**Requirements**:
- At least 2 years experience working directly with youth, facilitating large groups, and/or mental health and wellness experience would be an asset
- Willingness to be trained in the Community Helpers Program is a requirement
- Certification in First Aid and CPR is required
**Terms of Employment**: Full-time, weekdays 37.5 hours per week (flexible time basis)
**Salary**: From $28.00 per hour
