ROLE:
The Child Support Worker is responsible for the implementation and assessment of the services provided to children residing at the Shelter. The primary goal is to assist children during the transitional period, to help children gain an understanding of family violence and to role model and teach alternative methods of dealing with family conflict, tension, and/or stress through effective communication.

SPECIFIC KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:
Client Service Accountabilities:
 Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times

 Provides a secure, accepting, nurturing and non-violent environment for all children who come to CAWES

 Provide for the development of positive self-image/esteem

 Develop and provide age appropriate and interest-based opportunities for children

 Act as a liaison between shelter, clients, other service providers and the community

 Advocate on behalf of clients as required

 Provide custodial care for children as required by mothers attending specific appointments

 Provide informal child programming

 Provide parent and child playtime opportunities

 Provide after hours support for child related matters, when child support coordinator is not available

Administrative Responsibilities:
 Conduct child intake assessments with children old enough to communicate about their family situation

 Conduct Mom intake assessments; to assess parenting needs

 Provide pertinent information and appropriate referrals

 Maintain accurate files and reports in compliance with policies and procedures

 Attend staff meetings and in-services

 Attend seminars/workshops to keep up to date with new research regarding children and violence

 Comply with all policies and procedures of the Shelter

 Perform other tasks as required by the Child Support Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:
 Post-secondary degree in Early Childhood Development or Rehabilitation Services or combined experience and education

 Knowledge of family violence and crisis intervention strategies an asset

 Knowledge regarding impact of family violence on children/adolescents is essential

 Experience working with children; sensitivity to feelings/needs of children in crisis

 Good written and verbal communication skills

 Observation skills and knowledge of assessment an asset

 Good organizational skills

 Good interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team

 Ability to be non-judgmental and empathetic

 Ability to deal with stress in a healthy manner

 Ability to conduct self in a professional manner

 Cross-cultural awareness an asset

 Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is an asset

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 4 months

**Salary**: $20.20 per hour

Schedule:

- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday

Supplemental pay types:

- Overtime pay

- Red Deer, AB T4N 3R1: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
