Position: Teacher’s Assistant - Headstart Program

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for the design, development and delivery of cultural, educational and behavioral programs, play activities, and learning situations that will meet the intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and special needs of children participating in the Head Start Program. Through a process of ongoing observation and assessment, the Teacher Assistant will monitor the progress of each child’s development and provide feedback to the ECE Team Leader. The Teacher Assistant shall ensure that all activities are undertaken in a manner that is consistent with, and complementary to, the Vision Statement, the Principles and Values and the policies and procedures of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre.

Hours of Work: 8:45 AM - 4:30 PM - Monday to Friday

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formulates and plans an age-appropriate / age-based curriculum of classroom and field activities for children involved in the Head Start Program, in accordance with the recognized components of a child development program and AHS program mandated components. Ensures that subsequent daily activities are delivered and conducted in a manner that is complementary to, and in compliance with, the approved curriculum.
- Plans, develops and delivers age appropriate language and cultural activities for both the AHS classroom and field trip activities. The cultural and language activities will be educational based with emphasis on Metis, First Nation & Inuit culture, tradition and values.
- Conducts Developmental Profiles relative to the physical, spiritual, social / emotional and language / cognitive development of each child within the Program. Monitors and assesses the individual progress achieved by the child on an ongoing basis, and provides regular information, feedback and support to the parent(s).
- Observes and accurately documents the conduct and behavior of each child and, where necessary and appropriate, develops and implements strategies / interventions designed to correct or mitigate inappropriate conduct or behavior.
- Supervises and ensures the safety of children during free playtime, while on outings and field trips and in the capacity of Bus Monitor and/or Bus Driver, as required, while the children are being transported both to and from the Aboriginal Centre.
- Provides objective information for the parent/caregiver regarding the individual development of the child and designs home-based activities and supports that will complement the overall objectives of the Head Start Program
- Ensures the availability of child-focused cultural resource in the classroom for use by both parents and children
- Maintains the floor area and associated equipment and resources in a clean and tidy fashion.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Classification as an Early Childhood Educator level II or level III by the Child Care Education Program Approval Committee, Manitoba Education and Training.
- Possession of a valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License, with a clean driver’s abstract, or must obtain within three (3) months of date of hire.
- Ability to operate a bus with a capacity of between twenty and thirty-five passengers, combined with the successful completion the Defensive Driving Course, as offered by the Manitoba Safety Council, which must be obtained within three (3) months of hire.
- Completion of C.P.R. course and a valid First Aid Certificate, or must obtain within three (3) months of date of hire.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with, and relate to, children and parents participating in the Head Start Program.
- The ability to communicate in an Aboriginal language(s) and/or previous exposure to Aboriginal communities and knowledge of Aboriginal cultures is an asset.
- Demonstrated capacity to function effectively in a working team environment
