Student Placement- Pasteurizing Technician

**About Us**:
**Position Overview**:
In this placement, the student will start by gaining a thorough understanding of NorthernStar’s food safety plan and completing food safety training as part of employee onboarding. They will use the Timeless Medical System (TMS) software to receive, measure, and document milk donations, ensuring traceability from intake through to distribution. Additionally, they will maintain digital food safety records, ensuring daily, weekly, and monthly compliance with regulatory standards.

The student will be trained to use the FTIR human milk analyzer for macronutrient testing and perform basic microbiological testing as part of the milk screening process. In the pasteurizing lab, they will process raw donor milk, adhering to precise lab techniques while monitoring critical checkpoints to ensure safety and consistency. They will also be involved in packaging and preparing frozen milk for shipment to NICUs across Alberta and Canada.

As an additional responsibility, the student will participate in the in-house environmental monitoring program, which verifies food safety and sanitation protocols. Opportunities may arise for them to contribute to internal research that supports operational procedures. Maintaining a clean, compliant lab environment and collaborating with the team to support NorthernStar's mission are key aspects of this role.

Wage range: $20-21 hourly

Hours per week expected: 38

**Schedule**:
Laboratory hours are Mon-Thu 7:30 am - 3:30 pm; Fri 7:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Public Hours: Mon-Thu 7:30 am - 4:30 pm.

**Essential Qualifications**:
Energetic and collaborative team player with a compassionate approach.

Recent graduate or current student in nutrition and food science or a related field.

Strong problem-solving skills, with experience in research being a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong data management capabilities.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Physical fitness required for standing and lifting (up to 40 pounds).

Ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced environment.

**Preferred Qualifications**:
Proven technical experience in laboratory procedures, biological research, or food processing.

Relevant work experience within healthcare, laboratory settings, or food production environments.

Familiarity with shipping, receiving, and logistics coordination.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with the public and collaborate with healthcare professionals.
