Job Summary/Description

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the NBD Group in the Department of Chemistry at The University of British Columbia.

This position will report to Dr. Nadine Borduas-Dedekind in Chemistry as part of a project funded by NSERC, Mitacs and lululemon athletics.

The Smart Textile Innovation and Knowledge (STINK) Team is developing advanced techniques to quantify and mitigate malodours in activewear têxtiles in a multidisciplinary effort that integrates advances in science and consumer insights. This research uniquely intersects (1) atmospheric chemistry, (2) exercise science and (3) têxtile science, represented respectively by Drs Nadine Borduas-Dedekind in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Michael Koehle in Kinesiology at UBC and Rachel McQueen in Human Ecology at the University of Alberta. The industry partners and collaborators are Drs Sian Allen, Adrian Lai and Rob Gathercole at lululemon athletica's Vancouver-headquarters.

Project name: “The anti-stink clothing label: quantifying and mitigating malodours from sweaty activewear”

Qualifications:
- PhD degree in atmospheric chemistry, environmental engineering, atmospheric science or related field.- Technical expertise with gas chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry.- Demonstrated ability in computer programming and/or complex data analysis.- Research experience, excellent communication skills, critical thinking, trouble shooting, and collaborating with internal and external agencies and stake holders.Expected Responsibilities:
- Operate, calibrate and deploy our Vocus proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometers.- Operate environmental chambers and photoreactors.- Analyze large datasets using Igor and other graphic software.- Develop methodologies for measuring partitioning chemistry- Assist our industrial partners with setting up the smell panel- Serve as the point of contact for external (industry) and internal (PIs and trainees) stakeholders on scientific and technical matters.- Provide reports (written and oral) to our industry partner on a quarterly basis- May oversee other research personnel.- May provide orientation on research lab instruments as required.- Maintain safe and clean lab space used.- Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Location:
The primary work location is the UBC Vancouver Campus
