**Job Summary**
- The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Outdoor Classroom and Landscape Manager, the Field Crops Technician will provide technical support to the department’s academic programmes at all levels (diploma, degree and graduate courses) and to field crop research.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Operate and maintain large and small field and lab equipment, and department vehicles. Provide driving support for class field trips as required.
- Engage in field layout, planting, spraying, harvesting, storage of plants and plant products, and participate in field crop production. This includes providing technical support to faculty, and honours and graduate students in their field research, and supervising summer student staff.
- Provide technical set-up and support in labs for various courses at diploma, degree and graduate levels.
- Oversee and maintain the Plumdale research facility and orchard as well as the pesticide, crop and equipment storage facilities, including inventory and records.
- Prepare and ensure adherence to safe field and lab work procedures by students, faculty and staff.
- Provide field equipment training to staff, research interns and graduate students.

**Note**
This position may require work outside of regular office hours, especially during field season, e.g. early morning and late evening work may be required during peak times. Compensation will be in accordance with the collective agreement.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

**Required Qualifications**
- Undergraduate degree in related field such as Plant Science or Horticulture, plus approximately one to three years’ relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Demonstrated experience in field crop production and management; understanding of field research; and experience operating tractors and small plot and field tillage equipment. Proven working knowledge of MS Office and Outlook. Strong attention to detail while multi-tasking and working independently. Experience in communicating verbally and in technical writing with a wide variety of individuals and industries. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and an understanding of safe work practices. Must be able to tolerate conditions in labs and field including extensive walking, lifting of materials, loud equipment, inclement weather and dust, and risk of exposure to pesticides. Must have or obtain prior to or within the first 6 months of employment: Pesticide Applicator’s License, certification in WHIMIS, OHS, First Aid, tractor safety training, and a Class 4 NS driving license with condition 15 endorsement.
