Financial Controller

**Hours**: Full-time, permanent with flexibility

**Location**: Edmonton / Hybrid

**Compensation**: $68-95k with Health Spending Account, Halal RRSP & CPA annual dues

**The Role**

IslamicFamily has gone from a $1.4 to $5m organisation in less than 3 years. We are looking for a Controller who can strengthen our internal reporting, forecasting and planning. As Controller you will play a crucial role in

The proper financial management of IslamicFamily’s work; budgeting, payroll, producing financial schedules, audit, etc

Leading the development of a halal cash management strategy, supporting the development of halal financing for affordable housing, and general advocacy for halal financing

Pushing excellence in reporting & transparency

**Your Impact**
- Build the capacity for the organisation to manage complex projects: multi-million dollar sharia compliant housing projects, tech subsidiaries, reporting to government/ community, and the meticulous oversight of zakat.
- You will build/implement the systems, policies & procedures that facilitate scaling social impact; from creating a model for effective zakat utilisation that can scale nationally to supporting frontline staff with tools that reduce financial strain on both them and clients
- Your work will allow staff, management and clients to be at peace, and facilitate the work of supporting the needy in our community.

- IslamicFamily is presently served by a part-time Controller who has been with us for more than 5 years. We are now pushing the limits of their part-time capacity.

**General Responsibilities**
- Responsible for all finance, accounting and reporting activities of the organisation & its subsidiaries.
- Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures
- Manage cost allocations between departments and subsidiaries
- Consistently analyse financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep the Executive Director & Board abreast of the organisation's financial status
- Prepare reporting for funders & ensure compliance with agreements
- Assist the ED in creating performance metrics and scorecards on performance of different areas.

- Lead financial committee meetings, develop agendas & drive process improvement
- **Monthly**_
- Review financials with the ED every month, and resolve and discuss discrepancies to help organisation be ready for future fiscal needs
- Ensure staff payroll, vendor payments, and reporting deadlines are met in a timely manner
- Proper management of bank accounts and payments
- Work with Treasurer & support ED on regular financial reports to the board that cover any discrepancies between the budget and current expenditure and provide recommendations

- Create quarterly financial statements for the treasurer & board that reflects the performance of the organisation.
- **Yearly**_
- Be the process leader for the creation of annual budget & support managers and directors in understanding/developing the budget
- Work with the Treasurer & third-party auditor (currently, Grant Thorton) to complete the yearly audit (year-end is July 31, statements are due in October).
- Provide auditor with information on all Assets, Liabilities and Revenue
- Ensure data required to issue Tax Receipts are provided for issuance thereof
- Ensure issuance of T4, T2200, charitable receipts, etc
- Review providers for insurance, RRSP, benefits plans, etc and optimise for halal compliance and performance

- Facilitate compliance with CRA, maintain charitable status and corporate registration
- Process emergency payments
- Issue ROE

**Basic Qualifications**
- CPA/ CMA with 3+ years of progressive experience(highly desired, equivalents will be considered)
- Experience with non-profit funds based accounting is an asset
- Flexible with technology, comfortable with G Suite, Slack
- Must complete a Police Vulnerable Services Check prior to starting
- Must commit to ongoing training
- Demonstrated commitment to a respectful and inclusive style
- Excellent etiquette and the ability to convey complex financial information to a general audience in a joyful, patient and clear manner
