The Alzheimer Society of Brant, Haldimand Norfolk, Hamilton Halton (ASBHNHH) is looking for a Responsive Behaviour Specialist. The successful applicant will provide behavioural management services to BSO high risk clients in retirement homes in the Hamilton/Halton area. The BSO Responsive Behavioural Specialist seeks to enhance the care of this population through direct assessment and care planning to individuals with an age-related cognitive impairment and responsive behaviours, as well as provide case-based education and support to service providers working with these clients and families.
Functions for the BSO Responsive Behaviour Specialist include:
- Completing comprehensive behavioural assessments in collaboration with retirement homes and other involved formal and informal providers
- Developing intervention plans including accessing augmented resources where appropriate
- Facilitating referrals/transfers to LTC and other services, programs, and hospitals (includes Schedule 1 facilities)
- Advocating on the patient’s and/or family’s behalf within the present health care environment
- Providing educational support and coaching to staff of retirement homes working with the assigned clients
The hourly range for this role is $25.49-$38.24 ($46,400 to $69,600 based on 1820 hours annually). We also offer a competitive Group Benefits and RRSP package.
This position is located at both our Hamilton and Halton offices. This position also includes occasional travel within the Hamilton and Halton regions. Office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, but occasional evening work may be required.
**Specialized Knowledge and Skill Requirements**:
- Demonstrated and extensive knowledge and skill working with elderly individuals with various types of dementia, delirium, mental health, addictions, other neurological conditions, and those who experience an acute behavioural change
- Demonstrated advanced best-practice skills in behavioural assessments, care planning, and the development of intervention strategies.
- Knowledge of current psychiatric and geriatric medications is considered an asset
- Knowledge of local Community Support Services, Primary Health Care and Mental Health services
- Knowledge of consent and capacity issues and legislation involving this population (e.g. role of Public Guardian and Trustee, SDM act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act)
- Other Knowledge Qualifications_
- Knowledge of PIECES framework and templates is a strong asset
- Experience working in interdisciplinary teams
- The ability to speak French is considered an asset
**Skills**

- Familiarity with standardized assessment tools (e.g. Folstein, Cornell, Cohen-Mansfield, MoCA)
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge related to the interpretation of cognitive diagnostic test results and their implications.
- Ability to perform comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment and build rapport with clients
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills to ensure preventative and early detection methods are applied

**Other**
- Proven ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines
- Valid driver’s license and full-time use of reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel is required (e.g. be mobile) and work in various settings/environments
- Strong computer knowledge and skills; familiarity with Microsoft Suite Applications
- Ability to work effectively with mínimal supervision and as a team member
- Clear criminal reference check for the vulnerable sector
- Evening and weekend work may be required
- Some remote work may be required
**Experience and Educational Requirements**:
A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with older persons with complex mental health needs, physical needs and associated behavioural issues, including individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Bachelor’s degree in a regulated health or social service discipline is required (e.g. Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, etc.). Master’s preferred.
