Overview & Job Position Summary
As directed by the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, the Cultural Heritage Monitor will participate in the monitoring and protection of marine and terrestrial resources and habitats within the Wei Wai Kum traditional territory. Wei Wai Kum Guardians (both Guardian Watchmen and Cultural Heritage Monitors) have a presence throughout the territory as they ground-truth and report back to their managers and Nation leadership, acting as the eyes and the ears on the water and land.
The Cultural Heritage Monitor will report directly to the Cultural Heritage Resource Coordinator and will attend field operations for forestry, stream assessments, archeological surveys, large cultural cedar assessments and other required inspections as required. The position requires note taking, data collection, and full reporting on everything that is observed on site. Much of the position involves long work days walking in rough terrain, as well as travel by boat, air and vehicle in Campbell River and the surrounding Wei Wai Kum traditional territory.
**Qualifications**:
Preferred Education & Training
- RISC Certificate
- LCC Training preferred
- Stewardship Technicians Training Program Certificate (VIU) or equivalent (preferred)
- Swift Water Rescue preferred
- Firearms Acquisition License (PAL)
- Valid BC Driver’s License preferred
- Security Clearance required
Required Experience & Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of Wei Wai Kum territory
- Experience on the land in the territory
- Awareness of Large Cultural Cedar
- Valid BC Learner’s Driver’s License
- Grade 11 or equivalent preferred
Personal Suitability
- Must have strong communication skills and be able to interact with forestry and archaeology professionals, as well as visitors and resource users in a polite and positive manner
- Must be dependable and have demonstrated a strong work ethic
- Must be organized, motivated, show initiative and be a team player
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to the Wei Wai Kum Cultural Heritage Program
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting the health of Wei Wai Kum territory and culture
- Must be physically fit, in good health and confident outdoors
