Position purpose:
Reporting to the Director, Labour and Employee Relations, the Advisor, Labour Relations is responsible for providing support, guidance and liaison with the union groups governed by existing collective agreements and non-unionized administrative and support staff. Work with all stakeholders including management and union representatives to foster a positive, harmonious and proper labour relations climate.
Support the strategic business role of the Labour Relations Sector. The incumbent reports to the Director, Labour Relations and needs to be knowledgeable in Labour Relations but also have the expertise to deal with extremely complex and highly sensitive issues. As such is responsible for dealing with the grievance process at the first step and for providing support during the collective bargaining process.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Provides expert advice on labour and employee relations matters. Conduct legal and fact-finding research in an independent manner to prepare background and supporting documents for disciplinary measures, grievances, arbitrations, administrative courts and presentations to formal committees.
- Provides support and develops strategies for the resolution of issues and problems as they arise through both informal and formal processes, striving for good relations between the University and its various employee groups.
- Represents the university at various instances, responds to grievances at the first step or as directed, responsible for the treatment and decisions surrounding grievances and as such, advise management accordingly or provide support to Human Resources Business Partners and other team members within Human Resources..
- Responsible for a variety of activities related to, leading up to, during, and following the collective bargaining process. This will include conducting legal research, comparative studies, data gathering and analysis in support of the development of the University’s position and ensuring the implementation of the ratified Agreement. Participate actively in assigned bargaining sessions.
- Responsible for analysis of data or trends and preparation of reports for the Administrative Committee and the Board of Governors. Participates in the development and maintenance of corporate employee relations data bases and tracking systems; analyze employee relations data and prepares periodic and ad hoc reports.
What you will bring:
- University degree specialized in Human resources management or Labour Relations or labour/employment law required. Masters of Industrial Relations or License in Law would be an asset.
- 5 years experience in Labour Relations at a minimum level such as a business agent or Labour Relations Officer or a minimum of 7 years of human resources experience in dealing directly with Unions as a generalist.
