No experience required. However, day couriers and evening pizza delivery drivers, with many years of experience, who are very reliable, are highly valued recruits and may be eligible for a starting bonus and somewhat higher pay.
Our delivery job has a lot of variety, and is mostly enjoyable. A typical day: you'll deliver medicine to chatty seniors as well as impressive floral arrangements and Thai, Indian and Greek food (for which there are more $8+ tips than you may expect). A route could be 10 urban pharmacy deliveries or a couple of rural flower deliveries, or something in between. You'll pick up deliveries at more than 20 different businesses over a week.
Most of the time the job is easy and straight-forward. For some hours and some routes, there are detailed instructions to follow as well as route changes and adjustments to meet the timing requirements of particular deliveries. This requires cooperation and clear communication from the driver. Drivers are also responsible for accepting cash and giving change on approximately 15 percent of deliveries as well as reading training materials.
We'll hold your hours for you on an ongoing basis if you're in good standing. (Our longest tenured drivers are 17 and 7 years)
**Pay**
Drivers are paid per-delivery and make tips. How this converts to hourly earnings is as follows:
Downtime is less than 20 percent of the time and half of shifts have zero down time.
While there are differences in earnings from hour to hour, there are not big blocks of downtime in the way there are with some delivery apps, and you will have a predictable monthly income (within a range). You are welcome to choose the amount of hours needed to be sure to meet your earnings targets. We are open 9:30 am to 10 pm and there are a lot of hours, and options, to make a schedule out of.
Overall, the earnings are modest. While clearing $25-30/hour net can happen somewhat regularly in the evenings October to April, and while some drivers do better than others due to higher tips, more efficiency and more fuel-efficient vehicles, note that this is not a $25/hr job.
**Is this a good fit for you?** A good fit is:
- you have outstanding attendance. Beginning in September, positions with somewhat lower expectations for attendance will be available (evenings only)
- you can do a regular schedule (a regular weekly schedule or a schedule made well in advance eg. around a continental schedule of your main job). Beginner in September, drivers with more casual availability will be welcome.
- you enjoy driving and are very comfortable behind the wheel (including in the rain, dark, in traffic, while parallel parking, while your phone is making sounds, while answering a call from dispatch (hands free/ with bluetooth))
- the hourly earnings averages fit with your needs
- can handle some stress. Stress is not regular but it can come in bunches. Having poise is a must.
- comfortable with customer interactions (this isn't like driving a truck. There are lots of interactions with other humans. You definitely don't have to be bubbly but you should be somewhat personable)
- reliable vehicle. And able and willing to have vehicle your repaired punctually when there's a problem.
