**BACKGROUND**:
**OVERVIEW**:
Reporting to the Director of Justice Programming, the Youth Mentorship Coordinator will provide mentorship and guidance to First Nations youth currently in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre (MYC), or who have exited the MYC, and develop culturally relevant, trauma informed programming that is grounded in goal setting, skill-building, prevention, and the promotion of holistic lifestyles.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Youth Mentorship**:

- Engage with First Nation youth in custody at the MYC by providing culturally safe and trauma informed mentorship and guidance focused on goal setting, skill-building, and prevention
- Assist with community resource navigation and education and employment interventions
- Maintain day-to-day case management, including case notes, and implement strategic planning
- Provide advocacy, referrals, and general support to youth as required

**Program Development and Facilitation**:

- Develop and facilitate culturally relevant transition programming and group workshops for First Nation youth that are skills and strengths based and focused on prevention and reintegration
- Promote awareness of the program to Manitoba Justice partners and First Nation communities

**Collaboration**:

- Collaborate with external stakeholders such as Manitoba Justice partners, community service organizations, and cultural supports to coordinate services and create wrap-around programming for youth exiting the MYC
- Liaise with SCO departments and staff, including staff in the Justice Program
- Provide program updates and seek input/feedback from First Nation leadership
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with collaterals and internal departments

**Maintain program statistics and participant files**:

- Ensure proper maintenance of participant files
- Maintain program statistics and other documentation relevant to reporting
- Complete monthly reporting, being mindful of and adhering to all program reporting deadline requirements

**EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Post-secondary education in Criminal Justice/Criminology, Indigenous Studies, Social Work, or other related fields. Completion of a degree program would be considered an asset
- Two (2) years of experience working with First Nation youth and/or the justice system. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Knowledge of and experience with techniques that aid in behavioural change such as motivational interviewing and action planning
- Experience working with multidisciplinary partners including corrections and community youth resources
- Strong understanding of the barriers First Nation youth face when engaging with the justice system
- Knowledge of First Nation culture, traditions, teachings, and related resources available for youth
- Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to successfully manage a case load
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to build trust and facilitate collaboration
- Ability to manage competing deadlines, work independently, and handle confidential or sensitive information appropriately.
- Proficiency in the use of computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams)
- Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages an asset

**OTHER REQUIREMENTS**:

- Current and satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector search and a current and clear Child Abuse Registry check
- Must have a valid class 5 MB driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for business travel
- If the employee is a member of a registered profession, they must be a member in good standing with their regulatory body

**WAGE RANGE: 60,000 - 65,000 per annum**
