Cambridge, Canada Cambridge Food Bank Full time

About the Role:
Each day, the Community Pantry Assistant walks alongside people experiencing food insecurity. This unique role is all about great customer service, equitable food experiences, pride in ownership, relationships, building trust, and listening deeply with compassionate ears. If you are an inherently positive person, that likes to keep busy, this role could be for you

About You:
You can’t help it: you’re a natural helper. You balance this caring tendency with an understanding of the difference between doing for and doing with.

While you can certainly fill out complicated forms, track data, and write important notes and messages, you feel most at home away from the desk. Your workplace on a given day will be interacting with volunteers, stocking food shelves, and gathering resources for a neighbor in need. Like the people you serve, you understand that customer service, personal choice and cleanliness is just as important at the food bank as it is in any local grocery store.

You may not be described as bubbly or a raging extrovert, but you definitely know how to build relationships. You understand how important it is to be present, to be reliable, to be patient, and to be kind. You know when to play various roles, and are able to step in as the leader serving patrons and stocking shelves, as well as when to step back and support volunteers to take the lead.

You come from a place of being able to see people as individuals with their own stories and work from a place free of judgment. You understand the cycle of poverty and meeting people where they are at. You look past each person’s exterior to see the unique human inside. You are comfortable working with people from a very diverse backgrounds we could name, some facing multiple and complex barriers, including addictions, physical illnesses, disabilities, and cognitive and mental health challenges.

Finally, you can thrive in a role where you are a part of a larger team with a shared vision of creating a compassionate, equitable community, where everyone is nourished. Each of us contributes to building health and belonging through food and are passionate about healthy people, a connected community, and environmental sustainability.

Does the profile above sound like you, or mostly like you? Then we want you to get in touch with us.
