Legislative Assistant
**Company Description**
Are you ready to hit the ground running in one of the most dynamic political workplaces in Canada? We are committed to serving our constituents, influencing policy at the highest level, and doing it all with energy, teamwork, and yes — humour, camaraderie, and the occasional office event. If you thrive under pressure, enjoy collaboration, like ideas to bounce around, and want to be part of something meaningful — this is the opportunity for you.
As Legislative Assistant, your role will include, but not be limited to:
- Conduct research and analysis on legislative and policy issues (both government bills and private members’ bills), committee reports, and emerging issues.
- Monitor and track legislation, regulations, policy announcements — keep abreast of parliamentary procedure and rules.
- Prepare briefing materials, speaking notes, draft questions for Question Period, speeches, debate content for the House, committees, and other parliamentary functions.
- Attend committee meetings, pre‑meetings, stakeholder meetings; take notes; follow up on action items.
- Oversee the MP’s calendar in Ottawa: coordinate appointments with Ministers, other MPs, stakeholders; manage meeting logistics (room bookings, printing, pre‑reading materials, etc.).
- Liaise with other MP offices, all levels of government, non‑governmental stakeholders, and interest groups.
- Assist in planning and executing events.
- Support communications efforts tied to the MP’s parliamentary work: media scans, drafting op‑eds or commentary, preparing public statements tied to legislative developments.
- Occasionally work evenings or weekends (e.g. when House is sitting, for events, staffing the member, or urgent legislative deadlines).
We believe that this role is not just a job — it’s a launchpad. For someone who’s ready, motivated, and energetic, you’ll gain incredible exposure to legislation, policymaking, stakeholder networks, and you’ll help shape real decisions. If that sounds like your kind of place — we’d love to hear from you.
**Qualifications**
We’re looking for someone who brings both the right experience and the right personality. You should be:
- ** Outgoing, friendly, tireless**, with a can‑do attitude and willingness to jump in wherever needed.
- Comfortable working as part of a tight, collaborative, supportive team. You thrive when bouncing ideas off others, coordinating multiple moving parts, and delivering under deadline.
- Academically or practically trained in political science, public policy, government relations, or a closely related field. You’ve either studied it or worked in it — or both.
- Well‑versed in the Canadian political system, parliamentary procedures, committee work, and relations between different levels of government.
- Excellent communicator, both in **written and oral** English. The ability to write and communicate clearly, concisely, persuasively is non‑negotiable.
- Able to manage multiple priorities, adapt at short notice, and maintain strong organisational skills.
- Comfortable with stakeholder engagement: working with other MPs’ offices, ministries, non‑profits, community leaders, etc. Diplomacy, tact, and solid judgement are essential.
- Happy to work in fast‑paced, high‑pressure moments, but also to celebrate team successes — be part of a culture of achievement **and** fun.
**What Gives You an Edge**
These are not required, but will put you ahead:
- Bilingualism (English & French) **_— priority will be given_** to bilingual applicants. (Strong oral and written ability in both languages.), other languages are always a plus.
- Previous political experience: working in an MP’s office, for a political party, on campaigns, policy research, or government relations.
- Experience preparing policy briefs, speeches, or committee/House materials.
- Experience dealing with media, communications, social media, or constituent relations.
- Excellent organisation tools knowledge (e.g. Microsoft Office suite, collaborative tools, possibly social media / content platforms).
**Additional Information** Compensation & Working Conditions**
- Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Standard office hours, but be ready for flexibility: evenings, weekends when Parliament is sitting or for special events.
- Work will take place in Ottawa; you must be able to work in person.
- You will have colleagues who support you, opportunities to grow in the role, and a chance to make a real impact in policy, legislation, and constituent lives.
**How to Apply**
Please send the following:
- A cover letter explaining why you want this role and how your background (academic, work, personal) makes you a great fit.
- Your résumé (one page, concise, focused on relevant experience).
- Any writing samples (policy brief, speech, memo) if available.
**Additional Information**
We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
