Purpose of this Position
The Operations Shift Manager is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of the shift operational plans and related site activities. The Operations Shift Manager manages employees, contractors, visitors and processes, adhering to safety and operating policies and procedures to ensure the smooth running of terminal operations while meeting customer and business requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure that the operational requirements and KPIs of the working shift are fully met in an efficient and safe manner in accordance with current safety regulations and health and safety policies.
Provide consistent leadership for the operations on a shift-by-shift basis
Manage the efficiency of cargo handling operations, including coordinating the various activities of different operational groups to optimize the efficient deployment of labour and resources.
Ensure safe and efficient interaction with maintenance activities and personnel.
Ensure strong communications and working relationships within the shift operations team and all related stakeholders.
Manage Operations Foremen, including hiring, training, discipline, and off-boarding, to ensure that the Company's needs and requirements are adhered to.
Maintain productive working relationships with labour and union representatives and ensure that labour policies and agreements are adhered to.
Ensure that systems and procedures are followed to enable the progress of operations to be monitored by other staff, customers, and authorities.
Identify and solve problems and issues daily, usually of a routine or moderately complex nature.
Drive a performance management culture within the operations team ensuring that the targets are met in line with the business needs.
Advance agreed upon initiatives, propose new initiatives, and adopt a culture of continuous improvement.
Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge
A degree in business, operational management, logistics or other related discipline.
Minimum 5 years' experience as a Manager or Supervisor in a fast moving operation.
A positive, hands-on approach and the ability to work as a team member.
Strong people management skills with well-formed motivational skills, including solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives with all departments and levels.
Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.
Solid understanding of vessel/rail/gate/yard cargo handling operations, vessel construction, cargo stowage, cargo securing and applicable regulations.
Outstanding computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the proven ability to learn new systems quickly.
Flexibility to meet the requirements of a 24/7 operation.
Willingness to develop skills across all functions of a Shift Manager role within DP World Canada which may include opportunities at other Canadian marine terminals.
Experience working in a safety-focused environment with an excellent understanding of Health and Safety legislation and the ability to effectively communicate these values to the workforce.
Valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle in an industrial site.
Ability to identify risks and hazards and maintain situational awareness while navigating through the terminal work envinronment.
Ability to ascend and descend ladders on vessels and equipment during the shift.
