In January 2025, BHE Canada launched AlbertaEx, a power marketing affiliate created to optimize our generation and transmission portfolio and drive commercial growth. AlbertaEx is seeking an Energy Trader to join our expanding 24/7 trading team. This role is integral to optimizing our asset portfolio, expanding market presence, and supporting our entry into the Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM).
Reporting to the Manager, Power Marketing, the Energy Trader will execute trading strategies across Alberta and the Pacific Northwest electricity markets, schedule and tag physical flows, manage market bidding and compliance, and develop analytics to support commercial decision-making. This position operates on a rotating day/night shift schedule to ensure continuous market coverage.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Negotiate and execute approved trading strategies across Alberta and broader WECC power markets
- Maximize commercial value from a diverse portfolio of assets located in Alberta and Montana, including wind, solar, energy storage, natural gas, and firm transmission rights
- Schedule and tag power flows across multiple markets, actively managing real-time operational constraints, market volatility and changing system conditions
- Manage bid and offer submissions in AESO, WEIM, and other applicable markets, ensuring accuracy and compliance with market rules
- Build and maintain short-term price forecasting models and market analytics to support real-time and forward trading strategies
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with counterparties, customers, and utilities to enhance deal flow, expand market access, and reinforce AlbertaEx’s reputation for professionalism and reliability.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, or a related field; an advanced degree would be an asset
- Experience trading and scheduling physical power in Alberta and/or WECC markets
- Strong understanding of energy market conditions.
- Proficiency with trading platforms and analytical tools, such as Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems, tagging platforms, and ICE-NGX.
- Strong analytical skills in quantitative analysis and spreadsheet modelling.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced trading environment with a rotating shift schedule.
- Communication and negotiation skills to develop industry contacts, negotiate outcomes, and close on opportunities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
