**Requisition ID**: 9701**Hours Per Week**: 28**Position**: Existing**FTE**: 0.8**Department**: Speech Language Pathology**No Months Per Year**: 10**Position Status**: Temporary**Employee Group**: Unifor**Rate of Pay**: $36,624 - $51,256**Posting Closing Date**: 3/14/25Department of Speech-Language Pathology, Edmonton Catholic Schools is looking for a Sign Language Interpreter Interpreter who will partner with the teacher to facilitate learning and provide clear communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), their hearing peers and school staff. The job’s primary focus is to provide interpretation services using American Sign Language (ALS) for students who are Deaf or who have profound hearing loss. The job also provides Interpretation in the language mode best suited to the student’s needs (i.e. American Sign Language, Signed Exact English).

**Responsibilities**:

- Interpret English into sign language and interpret sign language into English
- Prepare for interpreting duties through self-study, acquiring educational material, and communicating regularly with the teacher
- Use Special Projects blocks to provide Interpretation one-on-one with a student of English-based materials, assisting in the interpretation of resources and lessons provided by the teacher
- Meet and communicate with the teacher on a regular basis to discuss and prepare for upcoming lessons
- With the guidance of the teacher, deliver the modified educational program within the classroom setting during class time
- Act as a liaison between teachers and the multi-disciplinary teamUse Signed Exact English as a teaching tool for English (Language Arts) and Special Projects for students who do not have an interpreter
- With the guidance of the classroom teacher, deliver the modified educational program, within the classroom setting, during class time
- Act as a liaison between teachers and the multi-disciplinary teamProvide input to the other members of the Educational Team and parents to create and implement the Individual Program Plan
- Act as a resource to the multi-disciplinary team
- Provide interpretation during school hours (i.e. field trips, school activities, meetings with administrators and/or teachers)
- Plan activities and co-curricular activities for primary students to participate in with peers to assist socialization and community growth
- Provides extra help to students with mild to severe learning, behavioural and/or emotional disabilities when the primary student is away or does not require assistance
- Act as a resource to teachers, students, and staff with regard to sign language and Deaf Culture
- Operate specialized equipment and assistive technology to support learning (i.e. communication systems, computers, hearing aids, and equipment)
- Assist DHH students to develop and build social skills, peer interactions, self-esteem, independence, confidence, and self-avocation
- Model interactions with studentsMaintains skill level through ongoing professional development activities
- Participate in community activities related to Deaf Culture
- Enhance and maintain knowledge by reading articles, periodicals, and information obtained from the Internet
- Develop and maintain a network of professional contactsAssist co-workers during peak periods and absences
- Work with other Deaf or Hard of Hearing students
- Work with other students, if needed
- Participate in school activities, special events, and projects
- Provide other support and perform duties as directed

**Qualifications**
- High school diploma and completion of a recognized Interpreter Training program, plus three years of directly related experience
- Fluent in the English language and American Sign Language, (may include Signed Exact English or other ASL Modes)
- Active membership in the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Alberta (ASLIA), Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI), and/or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is required
- Considerable knowledge of classroom routines, equipment of the DHH, and assistive technology
- Knowledge of Anger and Behavior Management, Crisis Intervention, De-escalation and Safe Restraint
- Certification in First Aid and CPR, and knowledge of how to administer medications
- Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Office 365, Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer
- Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Legislation specifically related to student records
- Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Occupational Health and Safety regulations
