Edmonton, Canada Norquest College Full time

**COMPETITION NUMBER: 763**

**FACULTY OF ACADEMIC STRATEGY & INTEGRATION**

NorQuesters are difference makers and we’re searching for someone dedicated to finding ways forward to join our Accessibility Services team as a Sign Language Interpreter (SLI).

The Sign Language Interpreter’s primary role is to facilitate communication between people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and those who are not. SLIs report to the Manager of Accessibility Services but are themselves responsible for scheduling and monitoring interpreting services including services provided by casual-hire interpreters. Our team works to provide an inclusive, diverse and compassionate environment for Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals who attend or work at NorQuest College. We provide service to students virtually and in-person.

**HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE**:

- Interpret for students in classes and other interactions where they may require an interpreter. This includes but is not limited to: students meeting with an instructor, attending student events, convocation, appointments with advisors or counsellors etc.
- Preparation for interpreting. Researching, requesting, gathering information prior to interpreting and previewing materials is an important part of providing effective interpreting services. This may include researching content-specific signs, consulting with participants before an event, and getting general and specific background information, not only of content but of purpose, intent and goals of participants and stakeholders in any given situation.
- Coordinating interpreting services. Interpreting team members share this responsibility, collaborating to establish a schedule for interpreting classes each term and taking turns being the main contact person handling requests for interpreting. Requests are received, responded to and fit into the overall schedule, frequently requiring rearrangements in scheduling plus contacting casual-hire interpreters and coordinating services provided by both permanent staff and casual interpreters.

**WHAT YOU BRING**
- A 2 year post-secondary diploma/ completion of a recognized Sign Language Interpreter Program.
- 3-5 years related experience.
- Experience in an adult educational setting.
- Excellent computer/technology skills and ability to learn new technology quickly.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral).
- Ability to follow and implement best practice guidelines.
- A solid understanding of Alberta Education’s Innovation and Advanced Education, and the Code of Ethics from the national interpreting organization AVLIC (Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada).

**WHAT MAKES YOU A DIFFERENCE MAKER?**

As a difference maker, you bring:

- Knowledge of the purpose and goals individuals or groups may have in a situation is important.
- The ability to ‘read’ people and accurately assess (if unstated) their intent or hopes for the outcome of a particular interaction. This plays a large role in customer satisfaction for the consumers of the interpreting service.
- Analytical skills along with empathy and passion.
- Experience with handling language, expressing emotion and thinking quickly and clearly; as well as acting experience or other expressive skills are used frequently as the interpreter must convey both sides of an interaction, switching back and forth rapidly at times.
- A high degree of independent work and self-monitoring is required, along with ability to receive and incorporate feedback from colleagues and consumers.

**SALARY**:$30.09 - $39.10 hourly. Reflective upon what you bring AKA your education and experience, plus 11.2% in lieu of vacation. This is a casual position.

We offer flexible work options. We strive for balance between a flexible work environment, connectedness to the campus community, and ensuring NorQuesters are set up to succeed in their roles and responsibilities.

For applicants who have completed post-secondary studies from outside of Canada, it is recommended they obtain an assessment of their credentials from a recognized Canadian Credential Evaluator, such as:
