Directions Youth Services is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community. We believe in the resiliency of Vancouver’s youth who are unhoused and street-involved. We assist youth under the age of 25 to get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance use. Our teams strive to create spaces and build connections with youth who are facing challenges of street life, substance use, mental health concerns, and disconnection from their communities. Directions inclusive programs of shelter and drop-in, safe houses and other unique programs are committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work and fostering low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome.
The Intake Worker position is an entry level, permanent part time position that provides initial reception/intake to the Centre, determining eligibility for youth wishing to enter the Centre working with the support of Youth Workers. This position works to promote safer, healthier alternatives, and where possible, to assist in their transition from the street to residences and providing referral information where possible to eligible and ineligible clients, the position will consist of working with a variety of unhoused youth struggling with substance use, including those who are neurodiverse and/or face emotional/social challenges. This position reports to the Afterhours Supervisor and/or Assistant Manager of Directions Youth Services Centre.

**Location***: Directions Youth Services, 1138 Burrard Street
**Work Hours**: 28 hours per week (7 paid hours per shift, plus 1 unpaid meal break)
Two positions available:
**Position #1**: 00:00-08:00 Tuesday-Saturday
(Work week starting Tuesday 11:59pm, last shift ending Saturday at 7:59am)
**Position #2**: 00:00-08:00am Saturday-Wednesday
(Work week starting Saturday night at 11:59pm, last shift ending Wednesday 7:59am)
**Salary**: GS6 Step 1 $21.84/ hour
_with a $2.00 per hour shift premium added to wages for overnight hours worked_)

What you bring:
**Education and training**:
- One year post-secondary education/certificate in related field
- Current First Aid Certificate and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset
**Experience**:
- Minimum one year experience working with youth, preferably in support of youth who have alcohol /drug misuse issues.
- Applicants with personal experience with addiction or street involvement require a minimum two years clean/sober and away from services
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
**Knowledge. Skills and Abilities**:
- Knowledge of community, social and health resources
- Knowledge of the systemic issues that affect low income and marginalized people
- Knowledge of substance misuse, adolescent development and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioral management
- Basic knowledge of mental health issues and treatment
- Ability to observe and recognize change in clients
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
- Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques
- Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to establish/maintain satisfactory work relationships with the public and other employees to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and other agencies and to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and a part of a team
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse population
- Basic computer literacy
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
**Working conditions**
