**JOB SPECIFICATION**
Controlled Substances and Hazardous waste technician at Covanta Environmental Solutions (CES) participates in the operations related to the controlled substances and hazardous waste covered by the licences and for ensuring the compliance of theses operations with Health Canada legislation and regulations.
More specifically, you’ll have to:
- Communicate directly with the qualified person in charge of the hazardous waste and controlled substances in our clients’ site to plan receptions. Our various clients are among the largest pharmaceutical and cosmetic product companies in Canada.
- Take charge of controlled substances, precursors, and cannabis as soon as they arrive at our facilities.
- Following receipt, store these substances in accordance with the various Health Canada regulations.
- Perform a physical inventory of 100% of the controlled substances received. Identify and accurately list discrepancies during inventory. Inform QPIC of any discrepancy identified during the inventory.
- Perform the physical destruction and chemical denaturation of controlled substances in accordance with the authorization received from Health Canada.
- Perform hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment methods and processes.
- Perform or coordinate sampling, lab analysis and data entry.
- Loading and unloading hazardous and non-hazardous waste from tankers, totes, and containers.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationship with other departments and teams to determine treatment courses for all waste.
- Operate and maintain plant equipment.
- Ensure security requirements are met, manage alarms, notifications and investigate any breaches of security.
- Work as an expert and resource for the operations team and provide updates and/or training as required.
- Work towards and help create a positive safety culture.
- Aid in meeting customer requirements for controlled substances including, but not limited to auditing and site visits, program and procedure management, discrepancy, and Certificate of destruction reporting.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Travel to and from Chambly, Quebec to participate in physical inventory and destruction.
To perform these functions, the Controlled Substances and Hazardous waste technician must meet the requirements of Health Canada to obtain the Alternate Qualified Person in charge accreditation (AQIC).
**REQUIREMENT OF THE POSITION**
- Hold a degree in a related scientific discipline (chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, chemical engineering, medicine, or dentistry) from a Canadian university or college or recognized Canadian equivalent.
- A minimum of 6 months of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Willing to become familiar with the provision of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Acts and its regulations.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Good organizational and priority management skills.
- Ability to lift 20 kg loads.
- Wearing a full-face mask respirator PPE is required on a weekly basis
- Valid driving licence.
