**Job Summary**:
The Academic Development Facilitator promotes the academic, personal and professional development of
students at Ontario Tech University.
**Nature of work**:
Reporting to the Manager, Student Learning, this position is accountable
for working in close collaboration with students, faculty and staff across the university to lead the
development, coordination, promotion, facilitation and ongoing assessment of student transition and retention
programming, and peer-led academic learning programs. The Academic Development Facilitator provides
advising and instruction designed to enhance academic learning skills among students and peer learning staff
to promote retention and academic success. In addition to student staff supervision, the incumbent supports
academic success on campus by conducting workshops and learning skills advising sessions to help students
with personalized study planning and learning support to help them achieve their academic goals.
**Responsibilities/accountabilities**:
**1. Responsibility: Program Development and Assessment**
Leads in the research, development, delivery, and assessment of supplemental academic
support programs. This includes:
- Leading the planning, development, assessment and revision of evidence-based academic transition and retention programming for students and peer-led academic learning programming, including summer academic preparatory programs, academic skills workshops, supplemental instruction programming, in-class workshops, and other student success initiatives.
- Building and maintaining relationships with key constituents as well as strategic partners in the School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, academic Faculties, Student Life, the Teaching and Learning Centre and student societies.
- Evaluating and reporting on initiatives to determine whether efforts are meeting the students’ needs and generating the desired outcomes to make evidence-based decisions on future programming.
- Continuously improving the academic skills and peer-led academic learning programs processes, policies and procedures so they are responsive to changes in the university
and students’ needs.
**2. Responsibility: Training, Mentorship and Coaching**
Provides direction and mentorship to students hired in peer-led academic learning programs
and other academic development student staff positions by:
- Recruiting, selecting and hiring upper-level student staff and providing them with ongoing supervision, mentoring, and performance management.
- Developing and delivering scaffolded training to student staff in adult learning theory, active learning strategies, metacognitive skills, classroom management and assessment,
both online and in person.
- Coaching and supervising student staff during the academic year through mentoring meetings, performance check-ins, job shadowing and observational assessments.
- Assessment of staff professional development and experience hours are part of the ongoing review to maintain peer tutor accreditation with the College of Reading and Learning Association.
**3. Responsibility: Learning Skills Advising**
Provides advice and assistance to support Ontario Tech students in the development of
learning skills and self-management strategies by:
- Advising students to identify their academic strengths and weaknesses, and creating individualized programs to develop students’ learning skills including metacognitive strategies, self-regulated learning, and holistic well-being.
- Engaging at-risk students in positive and proactive ways to support retention and student success, and referring students where appropriate.
- Developing, delivering and co-delivering small group instruction in learning skills, time management, reading, note taking, and metacognitive strategies.
- Researching best practices and new evidence-based techniques in learning sciences and
educational research.
**4. Responsibility: Resource Development and Program Coordination**
Contributes to the development of a comprehensive repository of university-level study skills
online resources to ensure access to timely, appropriate and effective study skills support. In
addition, supports the Student Learning Centre and project teams in the organization and
assessment of events and programs. Leads in the coordination of peer-led academic programs
and other academic development programs.
