Manager, Underwriting Operations, Middle Market and

We are looking for an individual to fill the position of **Manager in Underwriting Operations**, based anywhere in Canada. The team consists of individual insurance underwriters with varying levels of experience and expertise. This individual will possess proven supervisory, planning, organizational, prioritization and performance management skills. Skills are also required to mobilize a team in a busy, high-performance environment where meeting advisors’ and clients’ needs is essential.

Your key roles will be to:
1. Manage a team in **carrying out the daily underwriting of files** in compliance with underwriting policies and service standards
- Assign a daily batch of cases to underwriters
- Ensure the quick and precise handling of underwriting-related tasks, such as MIB verifications and post-issue underwriting
- Manage vacation time nationwide to ensure the presence of enough resources at any given time
- Be the acting resource person for cases of escalation, complaints and requests for exceptions
- Organize daily management systems (DMS) with the respective teams using key performance indicators (KPI) in order to create an efficient action plan for the day

2. Provide **training and coaching** on a continuous basis to make up for shortfalls in terms of knowledge, develop individual skills and abilities, and improve the team’s maturity, all in a context of a **career progression plan established for underwriters**
- Identify shortfalls in terms of training among underwriters and organize training and/or support
- Lead performance management activities by providing regular feedback and by carrying out the Altitude performance appraisal system
- Recommend underwriter promotions
- Regularly monitor underwriter and distribution network KPIs, and identify opportunities to improve overall performance
- Monitor and coordinate underwriter participation in webinars and conferences
- Help recruit talented employees who embody the company’s values and who are committed to the growth pillars

3. Take **corrective action** based on audit results and feedback from other teams and the distribution networks

4. Identify and recommend **opportunities for improvement in the underwriting process and production platform (LUS)**, and work with the appropriate individual or unit to define and implement the appropriate actions
- Work with case management, operations support and new business administration teams regarding daily operational issues in order to resolve them quickly and efficiently
- Recommend opportunities to improve underwriting rules and the LUS underwriting system and its functionalities

5. Contribute to **transformation projects**
- **Required experience**:

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a team of highly experienced underwriters, specifically with respect to performance management and career advancement
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in underwriting, including complex files
- Knowledge of performance management tools to control quality and productivity and ability to provide regular, constructive feedback
- Ability to identify needs in terms of training and provide training and coaching
- Operational knowledge of underwriting systems and manuals
- Bilingual (French and English / written and spoken)
