Department Overview:
The Burlington Fire Department is a high performing, innovative department that is well regarded by the community it serves and the community partners with which it does business. Burlington Fire Department responds to approximately 12,000 emergency calls each year; operating out of eight fire stations. With a full-time department of 239 staff and 20 volunteers.

Position Overview:
The Deputy Fire Chief of Community Risk and Professional Standards is responsible for overseeing and implementing programs aimed at minimizing fire hazards and risks within the community. This role also includes collaboration with various stakeholders, including local government, community organizations, and the public to enhance safety and preparedness.

Responsibilities:
As a member of the Department’s senior management team, you will be responsible for:
- Develop short and long-term plans to maintain service excellence and thoroughly prepare for future forecasted needs.- Monitor financial, operational, technical and demographic factors and recommends the required departmental capital and operating resources.- Ensure work of each functional team meets quality and efficiency standards, especially related to bylaws and legislation in accordance with the office of the Fire Marshal and associated best practices.- Develop and manage community risk reduction programs, including fire prevention and public education initiatives.- Conduct assessments of community hazards and risks, providing recommendations for improvement.- Lead the fire investigation team to analyze incidents and determine prevention strategies.- Formulate and implement effective City-wide strategies to ensure corporate alignment.- Oversee and approve budget planning and process.- Collaborate with other emergency services and agencies to integrate risk reduction strategies.- Train and mentor personnel in community risk management practices and emergency response protocols.- Provide reports and presentations to community leaders and stakeholders regarding risk management initiatives.- Stay updated on fire codes, regulations and best practices to ensure compliance and safety.- Engage in community outreach to promote safety awareness and risk reduction.- Work with the Association Executive to proactively address issues and maintain positive labour relations.- Develop and administer departmental policies and procedures.- Research and monitor emerging technologies and practices specific to the fire service and make recommendations to the team.- Coach direct reports and provide their performance evaluations and audit input.- Responsible for setting overall direction and vision; coaching and guiding senior managers; dealing with escalated performance management issues; and development of employees.- Participate in on-call rotation as a senior chief officer to provide effective leadership and decision making at an emergency situation and ensuring shared coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the entire year.- Act on behalf of the Fire Chief in their absence.

Requirements:
- The successful applicant will have fire service experience, typically with at least 5 - 10 years in progressively responsible positions.- Ability to set strategic direction along with the Fire Chief and ensure professional standards for the functional areas under direction.- Leadership experience in fire prevention, education, and or emergency management.- Certification in fire science, emergency management, or related field.- Strong communication skills for interacting with the public and stakeholders.- Analytical skills for assessing risks and developing effective strategies.
