Forestry and Land Stewardship Intern

The Forestry and Land Stewardship Intern positions (2) are grant-funded term positions intended to build capacity in sustainable forestry, forestry and land stewardship. The internship components are as follows:
- Build capacity in sustainable forestry in the following areas, through coursework and applied learning:
- Monitoring and assessing forest health, including tree species, soil conditions, wildlife habitat.
- Collecting data for evaluation and long-term planning.
- Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.
- Manage and control for pests, weeds, disease.
- Coursework - online micro-credit certification:
- Co-Management of Natural Resources Co-Management of Natural Resources Online Micro-Certificate (ubc.ca) 9 weeks. ($2400)
- Gain competency in co-management - tools, strategies, initiatives.
- Gain competency in institutional and relational change and inter-cultural understanding.
- Forest Health Management Forest Health Management Online Micro-Certificate | UBC 8 weeks/ ($2400):
- Forest interest biology, ecology and population dynamics.
- Forest disease biology, ecology and epidemiology.
- Forest insect identification and management.
- Forest disease identification and management.
- Log scaling Coastal Log Scaling | North Island College (nic.bc.ca) 8 mos. ($7500) Virtual classrooms / directed home study / fieldwork in Nanaimo on weekends for 12 weeks.- Identification of commercial log species.
- Weight scaling, log grading.
- Scale sticks and recording scale sheets.
- Occupational health and safety.
- Write Ministry of Forest’s Coastal Log scale exam.
- GIS - training to access data on GIS platform.- Forestry related data.
- Lands related data.
- Traditional land use data.
- Work under mentorship of Seabird Island Limited Forestry Partnership staff in day to day technical, field and office work.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Coursework:
- Complete and pass coursework
- Complete and pass the Coastal Log Scale exam
- Develop fluency in GIS
Applied learning:
- cutting permit submissions, post-harvest and silviculture obligations, data entry.
- Land use and land management through traditional laws
- Monitoring and protecting land and waters - monitor activity, gather data
- Co-management of natural resources
- Community outreach and education
WHAT YOU BRING
- Have a minimum Grade 10 completion.
- Over 18 years of age
- Physically fit and able to work in varied weather conditions.
- Commitment to learning, good work ethic and punctuality.
- Able to commit to an average of 30 hours a week for classroom and home studies.
- Ability and willingness to commit to 12 weekends for fieldwork in log scaling.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
