Position Overview Safety Specialists at Kiewit are integral in ensuring “Nobody Gets Hurt”. We hire people passionate about safety who will create, support, and audit our program to reinforce our commitment. Working closely with project teams, Safety Specialists develop and implement protocols, conduct training programs, and monitor compliance with regulations and company policies. This role will be based on a construction project and will be involved in field oversight to ensure safety for staff and craft employees, subcontractors, and consultants supporting the project. District Overview & Location Kiewit’s Western Canada District is headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia. We primarily perform heavy civil projects specializing in earth moving, transportation, roadways, bridges, water resources, and underground utilities. Our current opportunities are spread across the entire West Coast of Canada. Responsibilities Safety Planning and Implementation: Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans and procedures specific to bridge and marine construction projects. Ensure that safety protocols are aligned with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Kiewit's safety standards. Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and assess safety risks. Training and Education: Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and subcontractors. Provide guidance on safety-related certifications and qualifications required for specific job roles. Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization. Incident Management and Investigation: Lead investigations into safety incidents, near misses, and accidents. Analyze root causes of incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Ensure timely reporting of all safety incidents in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements. Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to bridge and marine construction. Coordinate with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits. Safety Performance Monitoring: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance on projects. Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement. Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership. Qualifications Education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Years of experience will be considered in lieu. Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction safety management, ideally with a focus on bridge and marine projects, or heavy civil and transportation projects. Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program on projects of increasing complexity. Professional certification in safety management (ie. NCSO) preferred. CPR/First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and OSHA/MSHA instructor certifications are preferred. In-depth knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety, and WorkSafe BC regulations and other relevant safety standards. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments. Strong written and verbal communication skills Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies. Strong work ethic - Willing to do what it takes to get the job done. Willingness to travel and relocate to project sites as needed. #LI-RP1 Other Requirements: Regular, reliable attendance Work productively and meet deadlines timely Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment Perform work safely and effectively. Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
