Coquitlam, Canada City of Coquitlam Full time

About Us As one of BC’s Top Employers, the City of Coquitlam offers meaningful career opportunities that make a lasting impact within the local community. As the sixth-largest city in BC and the largest municipality in the Tri-Cities, Coquitlam is home to more than 160,000 residents and continues to grow as one of Metro Vancouver’s most dynamic and connected communities. Our municipality serves as the Regional Town Centre of the Northeast Sector of Metro Vancouver and is thriving through innovative planning and urban design, inspiring arts, culture and recreation programs, and modern urban parks. We are well-connected by state-of-the-art transportation systems and are experiencing significant transit-oriented growth around the Evergreen Line SkyTrain stations, while continuing to build complete, livable neighbourhoods in Southwest Coquitlam and on Burke Mountain. Our brand is grounded in excellence in governance, responsible and sustainable resource management, and the ongoing development of a vibrant, growing regional urban centre supported by new infrastructure and public amenities. The City has been recognized for excellence in municipal administration and is home to a high-performing organization that values innovation, collaboration, and public service. We are deeply committed to advancing reconciliation, fostering equity, diversity and inclusion, and maintaining respectful relationships with First Nations. We envision a bright future in Coquitlam — one built on teamwork, integrity, and service excellence — and we hope it includes you. About You / What We Are Looking For The City of Coquitlam is excited to welcome a skilled and motivated Project Manager to our Parks, Recreation, Culture & Facilities department. This is a fantastic opportunity to join our dedicated Facilities Capital Projects team and play a meaningful role in shaping innovative public spaces for one of BC’s fastest-growing communities. Working closely with the Manager of Capital Projects, you will help deliver a diverse portfolio of facilities-related capital work. While the team is currently working on several major initiatives, this position will take primary ownership of midsize capital projects—typically in the $5M+ range—such as facility renewals, building upgrades, park improvements, and targeted improvements across the City’s recreation and civic infrastructure. This role requires a high degree of autonomy. You will independently manage assigned projects from initiation through closeout, navigating an environment where some processes and tools are still evolving. You bring strong organizational skills, initiative, and the ability to keep projects moving forward while knowing when to escalate issues or seek support. There will also be opportunities to contribute to components of large-scale capital initiatives, including the landmark Burke Mountain Community Centre, the largest capital project the City has ever undertaken. Depending on team workload and restructuring, this role may support key elements of this multi-year project, offering significant exposure and growth potential. You will collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and internal partners on site development, design coordination, permitting, budgeting, procurement, and contract administration. A balanced combination of building-related technical knowledge (architecture, engineering, systems, construction) and strong project delivery skills will set you up for success. This is an excellent role for a project manager who thrives in a collaborative, warm, community-service–oriented culture, demonstrates sound judgement, and is motivated to help deliver facilities that enhance the quality of life for residents. What You Will Do In this role, you will: Lead end-to-end delivery of park and facility capital projects, ensuring work is completed on time, on budget, and to established standards. Independently plan, coordinate, and monitor project timelines, budgets, and risks in an environment with evolving processes and limited formalized tools. Manage relationships with consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders; oversee design development, permitting, tendering, and construction activities. Support the Manager and Director by preparing project documentation, financial updates, reports, and presentations. Collaborate with internal departments such as Finance, Procurement, Planning, Legal, Parks, and Operations. Contribute to select components of major projects—including the Burke Mountain Community Centre—depending on team needs and portfolio alignment. Provide informal leadership or mentorship to project delivery leads as appropriate. Foster a positive, collaborative, and service-oriented project environment consistent with the City’s values. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and experience may be considered. Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience leading building-based or park-based capital projects, ideally in the $5M+ range. Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects, make sound decisions, and keep work advancing without extensive formalized processes. Strong working knowledge of building systems, construction practices, and capital project delivery (MEP, structural, envelope, site constraints, etc.). Valid BC Driver’s License. Preferred Qualifications Experience delivering capital projects within a municipal, institutional, or public-sector environment, or experience working directly with municipal staff as a consultant or project partner. Architectural background or experience is considered a significant asset. Project Management Professional (PMP) designation and/or registration with professional associations such as EGBC or ASTTBC are strong assets. Experience with procurement, contract administration, and financial management of multi-million-dollar capital budgets. Familiarity with facility planning, building upgrades, renovations, tenant improvements, or other vertical construction projects. Other Requirements include: Highly self-motivated and proactive, with strong ability to work independently and navigate ambiguity. Strong relationship-building skills with a collaborative, respectful, and community-service-oriented approach. Ability to communicate effectively with consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders, and to diplomatically resolve issues or conflicts. Proven ability to foster a work environment that values teamwork, initiative, accountability, diversity, and innovation. Effective organizational, financial, and risk management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks. Sound political and organizational acumen. Why Join Us? This is a unique opportunity to: Lead meaningful facility projects that directly support community well-being. Gain exposure to the Burke Mountain Community Centre, a once-in-a-generation capital investment. Join a collaborative, warm, community-focused culture with strong civic values. Work within a high-performing organization committed to innovation and service excellence. Build your portfolio and grow your career within a supportive municipal environment. What We Offer: This excluded position has an annual salary range of $126,625 - $142,435. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills. You will have the chance to join a rapidly growing and diverse team dedicated to supporting the local community, and be able to engage in variety of learning and development opportunities. Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in an earned day off/flex day program. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options available. The City offers an attractive vacation and extended benefits package, including the ability to contribute to the Municipal Pension Plan.
