Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position Summary
Under the direction of the faculty member, and reporting to the Faculty Administration Manager, the ASL-English Interpreter (Designated Staff Interpreter) will be responsible for American Sign Language (ASL)-English interpretation, translation, and the coordination of these services as they pertain to the teaching, research and community service of the faculty member. The Staff Interpreter is required to interpret for a diverse array of situations including meetings, classroom lectures, seminars, field research, research, conference presentations, and interviews in the Faculty of Education and related academic events on and off-campus while adhering to the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct. The Staff Interpreter will also be expected to promote education and awareness of the position and role across the university community. Distribution of work will vary and adjustments to workflow will be required.
This position requires interpreting services to be delivered online and in person. In many cases, the interpreting or translation work done by the Staff Interpreter will be recorded and available to the public.
This position will require domestic and international travel from time to time.
This position is integrated within a wider research and teaching team assembled by the faculty member. As such, the interpreter will be asked to contribute their skills, knowledge, expertise and thoughts in the design and delivery of research and teaching tasks, as led by the faculty member.
The Staff Interpreter is expected to adhere to the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.
Duties
- Assumes responsibility for American Sign Language (ASL) – English interpretation for the designated faculty member, including but not limited to: course-related lectures, student meetings, seminars, graduate defenses, administrative and research meetings, visiting lectures, conferences, and field research.
- Prepares translations of audio or English text into ASL, as well as translating ASL media into spoken English and/or text. Knowledge of video and audio recording programs and editing features required.
- Researches and prepares for interpreting and translation assignments.
- Keeps up to date on current research and practice in designated faculty member’s field of community service, research, and teaching; in ASL-English interpreting and translation, with particular focus on working in the academic setting; on hardware and software related to video, audio recording and editing these materials.
- Coordinates teams of interpreters, as needed, on and off campus, virtually, and for field research as required by the designated faculty member. To ensure the interpreter’s health and safety, assignments exceeding one hour, or those of a complex nature, will normally require a team of at least two interpreters, unless otherwise negotiated.
- Coordinates with other conference and meeting organizers/hosts, to ensure smooth delivery of interpretation services for the designated faculty member.
- Coordination of French-Quebec Sign Language (langues des signes québécoise - LSQ) translations of research and teaching materials as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of an undergraduate degree; completion of a recognized Sign Language Interpreting program and holds a sign language interpreting certificate or degree.
- Excellent interpreting skills (ASL-English). Applicant MUST demonstrate a high level of fluency in ASL and English, and have superior skills in translating two languages: ASL and English.
- CASLI Certificate of Interpretation (COI), or RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent, or have initiated the process to achieve certification.
- Holds or is eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent.
- Minimum five years experience in English—American Sign Language interpreting.
- Two years of ASL-English interpreting experience in postsecondary settings.
- Ability to travel worldwide and must hold a valid passport for international travel (or be able to obtain such a passport).
- Valid driver's license; and 3 years clean driving record.
- Ability to learn and analyze high-level professional communication in ASL and English as well as the ability to accommodate a variance of communication registers.
- Experience in academic research, information gathering, and familiarity with research tools and practices.
- Experience working in an academic environment is an asset.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize, working with competing demands.
- Experience in coordinating individuals for task completion.
