To support our North American team, we are looking for a Structural Engineer to join us. You will be working on exciting infrastructure projects regionally and globally along with our highly professional team that provides technical expertise, design leadership, project management, and specialized engineering expertise.


 


You will work closely with a team of experts working alongside our customers on some of North America's most significant projects, particularly, the ongoing Ontario Line South project in downtown Toronto. The Ontario Line South project comprises civil, stations and tunnel project is one of many contracts to deliver the Ontario Line, a 15.6-kilometre stand-alone rapid transit line that will connect the Ontario Science Centre to Exhibition/Ontario Place. COWI is actively executing the design and construction services component of this design-build project for two stations: King/Bathurst and Queen/Spadina.


 


Your key responsibilities will be to: 

  • Undertake designs of complex structural elements related to SEM tunnel design and construction in accordance with project specifications and provincial codes.
  • Prepare work plans, schedules, and budgets along with performing analysis of complex structures
  • Prepare engineering reports and other technical documents
  • Prepare standard construction documents, such as technical specifications and tender documents
  • Have frequent in-person and virtual interfaces with Project Director, Project Manager, design team, BIM/CADD team, etc.
  • Conduct site inspections from time to time (approx. 10% of hours) and perform other functions as required
  • Review and analyse Requests for Information, Field Change Requests and other site Technical Queries.
  • Plan, evaluate, and adapt work using independent judgment and innovative problem-solving approaches, seeking technical guidance and supervisory approval for complex or unusual problems and project plans.

On top of that, you will have: 

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or higher (Master’s degree preferred), with a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience with design of reinforced concrete structures, ideally underground structures such as subway stations or major civil infrastructure.
  • Experience with structural steel design, ideally including propping, bracing or support of excavation.
  • Be a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, or ability to obtain registrations in Ontario within 6 months of employment.
  • Be familiar with the use of structural design codes such as  CSA 23.3, CSA-S6, CSA- S16, CSCE, and AASHTO along with having sufficient exposure to structural analysis software programs (e.g., CSiBridge, MIDAS, SOFiSTiK, ROBOT)
  • Be conversant in the use of software such as Excel, and Mathcad to efficiently produce engineering calculations
  • Be knowledgeable in parametric conceptual designs, the use of programming environments like Dynamo and Grasshopper would be beneficial
  • Experience with on site field reviews, shop drawings review and construction methodologies, including field change reviews and RFI’s.
  • Strong communication skills to be able to deliver concise and high-quality technical deliverables.
