Indirect Tax Manager - Head Office - Mississauga - Ontario
The Indirect Tax Manager has primary responsibility for indirect tax planning and compliance for JTI’s Canadian companies but is also expected to adopt the opportunity to develop a knowledge of direct taxes with the potential to coordinate Canadian direct taxes within three to five years. JTI’s existing Canadian tax team is comprised of experienced and longstanding colleagues in the area of Canadian direct and indirect taxes and they are looking to help develop the next potential lead of JTI’s Canadian tax team. The Indirect Tax Manager should be looking for a long-term career in taxation and welcome the opportunity to be part of JTI’s verticalized Global Tax team. In the long term, top performers with an interest in mobility might also have future opportunities to apply for other JTI roles in tax or other functions outside of Canada in addition to other potential opportunities within Canada.
Position:
As Indirect Tax Manager in Mississauga, you will:
- Ensure for the preparation and filing of all monthly indirect tax returns, payments and related journal entries including:
- Excise duty (tobacco and vape requirements)
- GST, HST and QST
- Provincial tobacco and vape taxes
- Provincial sales taxes
- Customs payments in coordination with our external customs broker
- Management of all indirect tax audits (external and internal)
- Primary Canadian tax representative with respect to changes/testing in SAP for Canadian indirect taxes
- Review and settle impact of changes to the various general and industry specific indirect tax Acts and Regulations and communicate such impacts to the various cross-functional Canadian colleagues and Global Tax colleagues
- Proactively act as business partner with other local functions with respect to potential new product offerings, changes within the Canadian distribution chain or tax clauses for new or amended legal agreements
- Proactively and enthusiastically adopt the opportunity to develop your direct tax knowledge and capabilities
Requirements:
- Post-secondary education
- Designation, or in progress to obtain designation, as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years experience in a Canadian indirect tax role in industry or with a CPA firm
- Well developed verbal, written and interpersonal skills
- Team oriented and demonstrating a flexible attitude with an eagerness to learn about our industry and the impact of taxation
- Strong project management skills with an ability to prioritize, plan timelines and complete multiple deadlines
- Exceptional attention to detail and willingness to delve deeply into transaction history is a must
- Ability to work independently
- Solid knowledge and skill level with Microsoft Office products
- English - Additional languages are an asset
- SAP experience is an asset
