About the Role

Reporting to the Engagement Officer, the incumbent will support the development and implementation of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Nutrition Strategy to endeavour to have student nutrition programs in all schools.

Duties include but are not limited to:1. Strategic Nutrition Planning and Implementation
  • Identify actionable tactics to implement the HWDSB Nutrition Strategy
  • Create a sustainable Framework to begin, continue and/or scale nutrition programs in HWDSB schools
  • Conduct an exploratory environmental scan of resources in Hamilton and HWDSB, to better understand the current nutrition situation
  • Utilize existing data to inform Framework and tactics for implementation
  • Analysis of program data to determine where additional support is needed, identify trends in program impact and outcomes, and identify gaps in program delivery
  • Collaborate with Hamilton Foundation for Student Success to raise awareness relating to Help Feed Hamilton’s Future campaign, and identify process to drive financial supports to schools
  • Support special events and initiatives related to nutrition fundraising through HWDBS
  • Participate in various committees, as assigned by supervisor, that support HWDSB Nutrition Strategy
  • Maintain, update and plan content for HWDSB websites and social media, with support from the Communications and Community Engagement department
2. School-Based Support
  • Support schools to implement, maintain or expand student nutrition programs in schools throughout HWDSB, and ensure all funded program sites adhere to outlined guidelines for school nutrition programs
  • Support the creation of a Nutrition Toolkit for school teams to use
  • Develop and implement training and orientation opportunities, creating strategies to share knowledge and resources with program volunteers/school staff, to ensure consistency and accuracy of program administration
  • Provide information and instructions regarding provincial reporting requirements and data collection methods, monitor submissions, and follow up where reporting is outstanding
3. Community Building and System Navigation
  • Build partnerships with other local, regional and provincial nutrition coordinators across the province to share effective practices
  • Connect with HWDSB nutrition partners to understand current programs and opportunities for growth
  • Support schools and the system in grant applications for the development and growth of student nutrition programs
  • Conduct an exploratory environmental scan to better understand nutrition supports at the local, provincial and national level
  • Utilize data from external organizations and school boards to inform HWDSB Nutrition Strategy
  • Participate in community specific roundtables and represent HWDSB on nutrition advisory committees (Example: Tastebuds Steering Committee)
  • Manage relationships and serve as point of contact for community organizations supporting nutrition in Hamilton
4. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Engagement OfficerQualifications:
  • Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Nutrition, Public Health, Community Development or a related field which provided a strong foundation in nutrition science, public health principles, or asset-based community development and programming
  • Additional certification in project management, data analysis or nutrition programming would be an asset
  • Minimum three to five years of experience designing, implementing or scaling nutrition or health programs, preferably in a school setting
  • Experience in multi-party project management in a collaborative environment involving cross-functional teams on time-sensitive tasks and long-term audiences
  • Experience analyzing program data, identifying trends, and preparing actionable recommendations
  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, government bodies, or advisory committees
  • Excellent strategic planning skills with experience in the effective management of multiple projects and demonstrated ability to develop long-term frameworks and translate strategy into actionable steps
  • Knowledge of reporting requirements and eligibility criteria for government or community-funded programs
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills for maintaining web content, managing social media, and preparing materials
  • Knowledge of the local nutrition landscape, school board systems and community needs would be an asset
  • Experience supporting events or initiatives that drive awareness or funding. May include creating toolkits, conduct orientations, and build capacity within school teams
  • The successful applicant may be required to work after hours based on system needs
