Research Associate – Social Safeguards in Forest Landscape Restoration

Vancouver, Canada UBC Faculty of Forestry Full time $68,932
Position Description

Countries around the world are making ambitious commitments to forest landscape restoration under the Bonn Challenge and UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. How these projects can contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation while minimizing adverse impacts on local communities is a critical question.

The Landscapes & Livelihoods Lab in the Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a part-time Research Associate to begin on January 15th, 2025. The position will report to PI Jeanine Rhemtulla and will require in-person work based at the UBC Point Grey (Vancouver) campus.

The Research Associate will lead a project examining social safeguards in forest landscape restoration. The project will include a review of how global guidance on ecosystem restoration conceptualizes and addresses social safeguards; interviewing practitioners of restoration to assess how safeguards are implemented in the field; writing academic papers, policy briefs, and guidance on challenges and recommendations for improving safeguards in natural climate solutions. The Research Associate will also write grants to secure future project funding and mentor graduate students working on related projects.
